This paper studies how different cultural values and rhetorical traditions may influence students' perceptions and understanding of effective ethos in persuasive essays. Fifty Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) college students and 50 American college students participated in writing English persuasive essays on the selected topics. The essays were then compared for similarities and differences in the use of rhetorical appeals with a focus on ethos, the credibility, and trustworthiness of an author. The study revealed that participants from both groups established ethos as an important rhetorical tool to persuade the audience to accept their viewpoints. However, they displayed different perceptions of what effective ethos entailed. For Chinese participants, effective ethos seemed to come from using detailed explanations that reflected an author's intention to advocate an ethical or moral message based on some Chinese cultural values. But, strong ethos for American participants appeared to mean the use of evidence--facts and personal testimony--to establish the writer's trustworthiness. The interpretation of the results from the perspective of different cultural value orientations was also discussed. 展开更多

This article attempts to analyze the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between the Armenians and Azerbaijanis by focusing on place and territory as two key subjective components of national identity. Place and territory are also crucial from cultural perspective because they enable communities to express their identity in a cultural landscape. Control of the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh was essential to express territoriality that is to protect language and identity. In addition, the article examines the exclusionary treatment of Karabakh Armenians by Azerbaijan and discrimination against them as the cause of the conflict and its intensity. The article also focuses on the desire for political self-rule as a necessary condition for nationhood. 展开更多

How to teach creative writing at school? If the procedures inherited from writing workshops have undoubtedly proved efficient as regards text production, it is also clear that in Switzerland, as elsewhere in Europe and in the Anglo-Saxon world, the present use of evaluation grids with their numerous items prevents secondary school pupils from adopting the stance of an author. Why? Simply because the most innovative and "literary" texts are always surprising: They are "different", and could not possibly result from writing guidelines devised only to facilitate a mechanical evaluation itself conceived for the sake of some illusory objectivity... Now, in our postmodern age with its rejection of models, what is more difficult than assessing the quality of creative writing? In our approach, we suggest restoring confidence in the teacher, an expert reader if any, who, acting as a publisher, dramaturge, or mere aesthete, knows how to take his pupils' texts seriously, acknowledge their aesthetic value, and look at apparent clumsiness as a possible promise of innovation. The teaching of creative writing lies both in this specific reception of budding works and in the teacher's performative utterances that, then and there, make the pupil a writer. 展开更多

Published in 1991, Jen's Typical American depicts a first-generation Chinese immigrant family's pursuing their American Dream in the Post-War American society. By choosing Chinese American immigrants as her main characters and describing their struggling in the American society, Jen expresses her understanding of being Americans. In the novel, as they move from "sojourners" to American citizens, the Chang family shows different attitude towards Chinese and American cultural values. The dreams they pursue also vary. This thesis, through an analysis of the dreams the Chang family pursue in Typical American, attempts to demonstrate how the Chang family identify with their cultural identities in this process, and how they evolve from "sojourners" to "typical Americans". 展开更多

This research seeks to add to the body of scholarship on the history of cosmetic surgery and American journalism and is guided by the following two-part research questions: How did newspapers and magazines frame plastic surgery between 1914 and 1950 and did the frames vary by year or did they recur throughout the time period studied? The purpose here is not to argue that the press had a direct effect on the way beauty was defined within the cultural landscape of the early 20th century, but to examine the way plastic surgery's frame in the popular press shifted from reconstructing war-maimed soldiers to beautifying ordinary citizens. 展开更多

This paper examines the musical tradition, widespread in the giant habitat of the northern hemisphere--from theUrals in the east to the Pacific and even capturing the regions of North America. The author considers music as areflection of worldview and religion. For this purpose the author uses a method of comparison of a mythological picture of the world and properties of musical language. An important element linking the two areas is vertical. In mythology, this is turning the world on several floors in which the world of people occupies the middle one. At the level of music--it is the vertical of overtone sound row. The initial timbre ideal of this tradition are th esounds of throat singing which are associated with the vertical of the universe and consciousness used as an important formative structure of the World Model. In the article the author considers a materialization of musical consciousness in musical instruments. For this purpose, eight instruments under different names are selected andpresented in musical cultures of people. This allows the author to create the card of geographical distribution of tengri consciousness. 展开更多
