Contemporary urban problems occurred mainly in the metropolitan areas,the prevailing type of urban community of the United States since 1940s.Uncontrolled horizontal expansion of metropolitan areas resulted in residen...Contemporary urban problems occurred mainly in the metropolitan areas,the prevailing type of urban community of the United States since 1940s.Uncontrolled horizontal expansion of metropolitan areas resulted in residential segregation,which in turn contributed to educational and employment segregations.Thereby that divided the United States into “two Americas”,with white middle class residing in suburbs and Afro\|American and other low\|income minorities left in central cities.The findings from this paper suggest that such harmful phenomenon resulted from the lack of an effective and integrated national urban policies to some extent.Such negative social consequences of metropolitanization and urban policies,as valuable perspectives, can help us to explain the dilemma faced by American urban grovernments in dealing with racial and other social issues.展开更多
