The issue arises as to whether these improvements have been effective in reducing agency costs, and therefore enhancing firm value. The objectives of this paper is to examine the effects of governance mechanisms of dividend, types of ownership structure, and board governance on firm value. This paper utilises a panel data analysis of 403 firms listed on the Bursa Malaysia over a four-year period from years 2002 to 2005. A hierarchical regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses and the data is analysed using the generalized least square (GLS) estimation technique. Overall, the results highlight the importance of moderating role played by board governance variables with types of ownership structure to influence firm value. However, the benefits of better corporate governance through enhanced board governance are not the same across all firms since their incentives vary with respect to dividend and different types of ownership structure mechanisms.展开更多

By the analysis of the conceptions of risk and return, together with the three hypotheses of technological analysis, a novelty model of metering and evaluating the risk and return of stock investment is established. The major indicator of this model , risk-return ratio K, combines the characteristic indicators of risk and return. Regardless of the form of the risk-return probability density functions, this indicator K can always reflect the risk-return performances of the invested stocks clearly and accurately. How to use the model to make optimum investment and how to make portfolio combined with clustering analysis is also explained.展开更多

The findings of this study suggest that the accounting earnings and book value are capturing most of the information that is relevant to assess the values of firms. At the same time, it also suggests that earnings and book value as well as non-accounting beta are more valued during the financial crisis as compared to after the financial crisis. Overall, the accounting estimate of the value of the firm is not deviating from the markets' estimate, which suggests that accounting numbers play an important role in the valuation of firms in Malaysia.展开更多

The study investigated the investment strategy of the Temasek Holdings as one of the most successful SWFs which is owned by the government of Singapore. Temasek Holdings was founded in 1974 to manage part of the government's revenues. Present turbulent times create a big pressure on healthy investment strategy of the SWFs. But total shareholder return for Temasek since its inception in 1974 has been a healthy 17% compounded annually. The main objective of the paper is to focus on the role of the Temasek Holdings as a company managed on commercial principles with an aim to achieve long-term sustainable returns. The study also analyzed Temasek Holdings'investment strategy. The study provides answers to questions like: why Temasek is of the most successful SWFs and what is the fund risk management? Another part of the paper compares investment strategy of the Temasek Holdings with other SWFs. The study has been conducted mainly on the basis of literature survey, secondary information and with using various web sites and research paper. The analysis has been also based on disclosures appearing in the Temasek annual reports over the period from 2008 to 2010.展开更多

Globalization of financial markets has been increasing the retail investors' community over the past two decades by providing a wide variety of market and investment options. However, it makes much more complex in their investment decisions process. This paper aims at identifying the factors influencing the retail investor's attitude. This paper develops a modified questionnaire. The average value of the five top highly influential factors according to the sample retail investors' were Investors' tolerance for risk, strength of the Indian economy, media focus on the stock market, political stability and finally government policy towards business. Four factors were given lowest priority or which had low influence on the attitude of the retail investors investing in equity stocks. Comparing to accrued components of earnings, cash flow components of earnings has more explanatory ability for abnormal returns and with higher persistence, especially for new economic industry. Eventually we find that investors' inability to distinguish correctly among the components of earnings. Constructing a portfolio based on the magnitudes of accrued components of earnings, we can earn 4% to 13% of excess returns for new economic industry and general industry.展开更多

Under the condition of incomplete information, each firm’s earnings man-agement will be influenced by the earnings disclosure policies of other firms. It can lead to "herd behavior" of earningsmanagement. This paper studies the relationship between earnings manipulation and rights issue policy based on thedistribution of earnings after management. The results indicate that Chinese listed companies trend towards controllingROE in the narrow ranges just above 6% and 10% .Therefore, "herd behavior" exists in the earnings management.展开更多

If the capital market is competitive, the investors cannot expect superior gains from their investment strategies with respect to the risk profile. Event studies are an approach to verify the impact of the information on the stock prices. In an efficient market, stock prices should fully, promptly, and quickly capture all the information. Instead, the market shows phenomena of an under-reaction and over-reaction for both the short and the long run. The mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are examples of anomalies. Often, the bidder companies record the negative abnormal returns for both the short and the long run. In contrast to the efficient market theory, the empirical evidence shows that this phenomenon is widespread in all (or most of) the countries of the world. This work examines the long-run performance in M&As. For this purpose, 40 bidders were observed in Italy during the period of 1994-2008 among listed companies. The buy and hold abnormal returns (BHARs) methodology was used, with which it was possible to observe the returns for three years following the deal.展开更多

The competitive firm invests in new productive ideas through scientific and technological researches of the human factor and services. The traditional factors of"old economy" based on physical assets have been replaced or at least reinforced, with the belief that the "new economy" takes its steps mainly through IC. The knowledge workers, at every organizational level, have the knowledge that allows the organization to be competitive and deal with the complexity of the environment by creating intellectual added value. In particular, the proposed analysis consists with an empirical way to show other financial indicators and market-to-book (MTB) value from the perspective of creating value for shareholders based on the dynamics of companies' performance, as value-added intellectual capital (VAICTM) is capable of expressing a direct relationship with the return on equity (ROE). The traditional financial information cannot ensure the high efficiency of a stock market and the need for IC reporting to explain intangible asset contribution in company performance.展开更多

The multiple regression analysis is employed to test the hypotheses, and the results suggest that firms with higher market power have lower systematic risk. It implies that firms with higher market power can reduce the unavoidable risk when compared with firms that have lower market power. Firms with more media coverage will have higher systematic risk, which indicates that firms which publish more news will have higher unavoidable risk. This research may be the first to provide the evidence of the association between corporate govemance mechanisms and stock investment risk. Interestingly still, this study has utilized the data of Thailand, which is an emerging market economy with a capital market structure different from those of the developed market economies, and the results of this study are anticipated to be applicable to other similar studies in other emerging market economies.展开更多

This study adopts an instrument variable (IV) approach to analyze the impact of financing decisions, in particular, equity or debt are obtained, on the performance of small businesses by using the panel data from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Business Longitudinal Database (BLD) 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007. Performance variables, i.e., sales and expenditure, are used as dependent variables. Equity and debt obtained are used as independent variables (or known as treatments). IV includes size of the business, age of the business, number of locations, and industry division etc.. The results from IV modeling outperformed those obtained from OLS (Ordinary Least Squares). Findings include: (1) financing has significantly positive impacts on the performance of small businesses in Australia; (2) equity and debt financing are used as alternatives, comparatively, equity financing is preferred; (3) capital purchases are largely funded by debt financing, while non-capital purchases and salary expenses are funded by equity financing; and (4) equity financing is more often used by firms with increasing capital purchases and declining non-capital purchases, while debt financing is used by firms with the opposite trends. The paper concludes with a discussion of the limitations of this research and future research's directions.展开更多

The strong support by the government through the relaxation and lifting of certain restrictions and regulations on property ownerships, have attracted investments in the Malaysian property market. This research studies the factors affecting the performance of 36 property firms listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia from 2003 to 2007. This research employed ordinary least squares (OLS) method to represent all the variables comprising stock performance, return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), debt ratio (DR), net profit margin (NPM), effective tax rate (ETR), earnings per share (EPS), and price earning (PE) ratio. Results show that ROA, ROE, and EPS have strong significant relationships with the property stock performance. Although it is a small sample size, some relevant changes and modifications can be included in future studies to obtain better results.展开更多

They ignore the impact of the market concentration of stock traded which could generate price distortion/manipulation. This study empirically estimates the impact of market structure (concentration) and liquidity (turnover ratio) on equity performance (price/returns) of 19 EEM. We use panel data for the period 1992-2000 and least square dummy variable regression technique that measure fixed effects and the dynamics of adjustment. The results show the significance of both independent variables. Liquidity favours investment, and market concentration suggests the potential for market/price manipulation that requires regulatory policies. These results indicate success of reform policies aimed at capital deepening to improve efficient capital allocation and provide profitable investment opportunities.展开更多

The impulses of three ASEAN macroeconomic forces---GDPt, EXt, and INTt acting for a given time influence the earnings of selected 23 1CT returns for listed companies on both domestic investments and outsider investments in the same period. This paper has investigated how other-concerning macroeconomic force acting might interrelate with rate of return of securities in the ICT sector, debt and financial innovations, in line with some significant formalized facts. The funding of capital inflow in part of ICT securities was statistically globally significant to recognize significant achievement in ICT specific pathways to distinction as the science of accomplishment. The public sector performing as a key purchaser of ICT security solutions related to integrate the ASEAN exchange members into modern capitalization can lead to adverse effects, such as risky investment-hub interventions due to the mixing financial systems in three ASEAN regional integrations through investments.展开更多
