A 26 mm ID column with side ports was used for sampling the liquid-solid suspension during expanded bed operations. Measurements of the collected solid phase at different column positions yielded the particle size and density distribution data. It was found that the composite matrices showed particle size as well as density classifications along the column axis, i.e., both the size and density of each matrix decreased with increasing the axial bed height. Their axial classifications were expressed by a correlation related to both the particle size and density as a function of the dimensionless axial bed height. The correlation was found to fairly describe the solid phase classifications in the expanded bed system. Moreover, it can also be applied to other two commercial solid matrices designed for expanded bed applications.展开更多

It can be used to measure the isotherms under supercritical condition. The adsorption isotherms of phenol on activated carbons and polymeric adsorbents are estimated and compared respectively for the systems of 'phenol-activated carbon-supercritical fluid CO2' and 'phenol-polymeric adsorbent-supercritical fluid CO2'. The results show that the amount of phenol adsorbed on the activated carbons and the polymeric adsorbents under the supercritical condition is much less than that under the general condition, which can be utilized to develop a technology regenerating the activated carbon with supercritical fluid. Moreover, the effects of ethyl alcohol, used as the third component, on the isotherms of phenol on the activated carbons and polymeric adsorbents under the supercritical condition are also investigated.展开更多

The construction of such infrastructures is an engineering challenge that must be proven over the long term. The purpose of this study is to understand the modification of the hydromechanical properties of bottom liners of landfills that may occur during their exploitation under leachate action. To do so, on the basis of its parameters of nature, a swelling clay from Burkina Faso is selected from soils of seven localities in Burkina Faso (West Africa). Laboratory tests carried out with distilled water and then with a young synthetic leachate show a degradation of the permeability of this clay from 2.42 × 10^-10 m/s to 1.01 × 10^-9 m/s. In addition, leachate leads to an inhibition of the swelling and a remarkable increase of its compressibility, inducing significant settlement. With the increase in permeability, the primary consolidation settlement is increasing faster. Changes in the hydromechanical behavior can be attributed to the clays mineralogy, mainly cation exchange and the development of the diffuse double layer.展开更多

The pump consists of the diffuser valve unit, the heat deformation material unit, the nozzle valve unit, the Peltier devices and the cover. The input current of the Peltier devices is controlled by the bipolar power supply so that the Peltier devices are heated and cooled periodically. The working fluid flow in the micro-pump is caused by the periodical thermal deformation of material which is caused by the periodical heating and cooling of the Peltier devices. In order to measure the fluid flow in the micro-pump, micro air bubbles are employed as a tracer. The corresponding movement is recorded by X-ray apparatus and its velocity is measured by PIV (particle image velocimetry). It is found that, the micro-pump developed here can make the working fluid flow. The corresponding fluid flow in the micro pump is confirmed by the numerical method.展开更多

In the first place, the thermal properties of carbon dioxide near its liquid-vapor critical point are discussed. It is calcu- lated that the heat capacity ratio and isobaric expansion coefficient of supercritical fluids are extremely high. Furthermore, the simulation for piston effect in supereritical carbon dioxide between two infinite vertical walls is presented. The numerical results prove that piston effect has a much faster speed of heat transfer than thermal conduction under mierogravity conditions. Moreover, the piston effect turns out to be stronger when closer to the critical point.展开更多
