患者女,21岁。因手、足及口周皮肤发黄1年于2004年1月来本院就诊。患者平素爱吃南瓜及红薯,近1年来早餐以南瓜或红薯为主,每天进食约200g左右,上述饮食半年后,双掌跖皮肤开始发黄。且颜色逐渐加深。此后口周皮肤也出现类似颜色改... 患者女,21岁。因手、足及口周皮肤发黄1年于2004年1月来本院就诊。患者平素爱吃南瓜及红薯,近1年来早餐以南瓜或红薯为主,每天进食约200g左右,上述饮食半年后,双掌跖皮肤开始发黄。且颜色逐渐加深。此后口周皮肤也出现类似颜色改变。渐波及手背、手指及足背。发病以来无其他不适,否认服用其他药物及富含胡萝卜素的食物。体检:一般情况好,各系统检查无异常发现。皮肤科情况:双掌跖、指趾、手足背皮肤呈橘黄色,边界不清,但以角化明显处色素沉着显著。 展开更多

A total of 31 wheat varieties(lines) released in different years in Huanghuai Area were selected as materials so as to study the carotenoids content,lipoxygenase activity, and some other quality traits of wholemeal. Results showed that carotenoid content and other quality traits had highly significant differences among varieties. Carotenoids content was significantly positive correlated with watersoluble pentosan and yellowness. Carotenoids content was significantly negative correlated with peak viscosity, hold through, breakdown, final viscosity, unit weight,formation time, and was negative correlated with peak time, protein content and stability time. According to cluster analysis, carotenoid contents in 31 varieties were divided into three major groups: one group had common carotenoid content, which included 19 varieties such as Meng 0318; one group had relatively low carotenoid content, which included 10 varieties such as Luomai23; and the last group had relatively high carotenoid content, which included 2 varieties such as Huaimai22. The average carotenoid contents of the three groups were 1.93, 1.07 and 2.99 mg/kg respectively. 展开更多

The flowability of five kinds of microencapsulation powders,with differentβ-carotene contents and by two alternative particle-forming technologies i.e.spray-drying and starch-catching beadlet technology,was meas- ured.The actual flow properties of the five powders were compared based on bin-flow test,and three flow indexes (Hausner ratio,repose angle and flow index)were measured.It was found that the repose angle is the most suitable index to reflect the flowability of these powders for the particle properties would not be altered due to compaction or tapping during the measuring process.Particle size and particle size distribution play most important roles in the flowability of these granular materials,which was also influenced by other factors like shape,surface texture,sur- face roughness,etc.Microcapsules with wall material of gelatin and a layer of modified starch absorbed on the sur- face showed excellent flowabilities and good mechanical properties,and they are favorable for tabletting to supply β-carotene. 展开更多

[Method] Gene knockout mutants pro- ducing less carotenoid were screened from 6 087 mutants; the yield of carotenoid and asexual spore was measured; finally fluorescent quantitative real-time PCR was adopted to analyze the transcription of genes related to carotenoid synthesis and asexual sporulation, [Result] Six knockout mutants produced less carotenoid. In one of them, the yield of both carotenoid and asexual spore reduced, because the gene which encodes an ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling complex ATPase chain ISW1 was knocked out. This gene was named /ca-1 in this study. And the /ca-1 deletion result- ed in a reduction of 88% in conidial production and a decrease of 81% in carotenoid production. [Conclusion] The Ica-1 positively regulates the carotenoid syn- thesis and asexual sporulation in N. crassa. 展开更多

The textural properties of acid-activated bentonite (AAB), which were prepared using four different concentrations of sulfuric acid, were analyzed by adsorption-desorption isotherm of nitrogen using an automated specific surface area and porosity analyzer. The total pore volume, specific surface area and average pore diameter of these four kinds of AAB show a regular changing trend, increasing first and then decreasing, the optimum of which can be achieved at a sulfuric acid concentration of 25% (sample A25). The kinetic analysis of the adsorption of β-carotene and chlorophyll in model oil solutions, namely, xylene and edible oil solution, has been investigated by using AAB. Experimental results indicated that the adsorption data fit the pseudo-second-order model well. The whole adsorption process of the two pigments on AAB was divided basically into two parts: the initial adsorption of pigments was rapid in the first l0 rain, followed by a slower adsorption process till equilibrium was attained at 60 rain. In addition, the amount and rate of adsorption on A25 increase synchronously with the initial pigment concentration and temperature. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics behavior of AAB with respect to the pigments is not influence by the xylene and edible oil solution. 展开更多

Microcystis often dominates phytoplankton in eutrophic lakes and must survive a long period of cold or dark conditions. However, the survival strategies of Microcystis to withstand cold or dark stress are less well known. In this study, we conducted experiments on the responses of two toxic Microcystis aeruginosa strains (FACHB-905 and FACHB-915) and their microcystin release in conditions of low temperature (15℃ or 4℃, with illumination) or darkness, and subsequent recovery in standard conditions (25℃ with illumination). On exposure to 15℃, a small decrease in cell viability was observed, but the cell number increased gradually, suggesting that M. aeruginosa FACHB-905 and FACHB-915 cells seem in general tolerant in 15℃. Interestingly, our results show that a higher carotenoid content and microcystin release potentially enhance the fitness of surviving cells at 15℃. M. aeruginosa cells exposed to lower temperature light stress (4℃) did not completely lose viability and retained the ability to reinitiate growth. In darkness, the maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and the maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) values and cell viability of M. aeruginosa cells gradually decreased with time. During the recovery period, the photosynthetic efficiency of M. aeruginosa reverted to the normal level. Additionally, M. aeruginosa FACHB-905 and FACHB-915 exposed to low temperature had increased caspase-3-1ike activity and DNA fragmentation, which suggests the occurrence of a type of cell death in M. aeruginosa cells under cold stress similar to programmed cell death. Overall, our findings could confer certain advantages on the Microcystis for surviving cold or dark conditions encountered in the annual cycle, and help explain its repeated occurrence in water blooms in large and shallow lakes. 展开更多

Par., and Bryum argenteum Hedw. are typical rock mosses growing on rocks in different terrestrial habitats. In this study, B. fallax and E. julaceum, which are epilithic mosses growing in rock desertification in Guizhou, China, were used as ecophysiological mosses in a combination of field investigations and laboratory experiments. We also investigated the reference moss B. argenteum, which is a widely distributed moss in habitats with soil as substrate. Our research focused on the response of the antioxidant defense system of epilithic mosses to drought stress. Most antioxidant defense indicators increased initially, then declined at later stages of drought stress. In contrast, the carotenoid content increased constantly. In addition, there was an initial increase(albeit variable) in relative membrane permeability, with this parameter showing a parabolic trend in all of the epilithic mosses. Among the three species, E. julaceum demonstrated the strongest resistance followed by B. fallax and then by B. argenteum. The epilithic mosses displayed stronger resistance compared to the native mosses; the increase in O_2 content and other reactive oxygen species(ROS) at the early stage of drought stress induced the enzymatic and non-enzymatic scavenging systems tosequester ROS. Moreover, the radical scavenging ability and strong drought tolerance was maintained. The longterm growth of bryophyte under drought conditions in a karst environment can help eliminate the intense response of mosses to drought stress as they adapt. 展开更多

Carrot (Daucus carom) is a valuable source of health promoting ingredients such as anthocyanin, carotenes, phenolic compounds etc. These substances are important to man as a source of pharmaceuticals, fragrance, agrochemicals as well as food additives and used for prevention of many chronic diseases. Since these activities may be correlated with the presence of antioxidant compounds, extract of carrot and carrot callus were evaluated for their anthocyanin, flavonoids and total phenolic content as well as total antioxidant activity. Anthocyanin content was measured by spectrophotometric method. Total phenols and flavonoids were analyzed according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method and total antioxidant activity was assessed by ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Anthocyanin, flavonoids and total phenolic content were estimated to be 9.36 mg%, 46.96 mg% and 57.01 mg% for callus and 6.82 mg%, 32.96 mg% and 42.69 mg% for carrot, respectively, on fresh weight basis. The total antioxidant activity for the callus and carrot was found to be 51.13 mg, 118.77 mg, 91.08 mg and 140.08 mg equivalent and 79.40 mg, 184.44 mg, 141.43 mg and 217.52 mg equivalent to gallic acid, vitamin C, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and trolox, respectively, when expressed per 100 g on fresh weight basis. The antioxidant activity of fresh carrot was found to be higher compared to its callus. 展开更多

The Protective Role of β-Carotene and Hesperidin on Some Hematological and Myocardial Measurements against Imidacloprid Toxicity in Albino Rats

Neonicotinoids including IM (Imidacloprid) are widely used as plant systemic insecticides. Several studies have indicated that pesticide toxicity may be associated with the enhanced production of ROS (reactive oxygen species). Both β-carotene (I3C) and hesperidin (H) have an antioxidant property and quench free radicals. This study aimed to clarify the protective role of β-carotene and hesperidin as natural antioxidants on IM induced toxicity in hematological parameters and markers of cardiac muscle activity in male albino rats. The treatment of rats with IM showed a significant decrease in hemoglobin (Hb %), MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin), MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration), HCT (hematocrit) values and RBCs count comparing with control group. On the other hand, MCV (mean corpuscular volume), WBCs (white blood cells) and Pits (platelets) count pronounced a significant increase in IM group comparing to control. Also, αFP (plasma alpha fetoprotein), CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen), CK (creatine kinase), CK-MB (creatine phosphokinase myocardial band) and LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) clarify a significant increase in IM group comparing to control. Both β-carotene and hesperidin mitigate the deleterious effects of IM on previous parameters. β-Carotene and hesperidin may protect hematopoietic system and heart muscle against toxicity of IM. These improvements of the results clarify the protective effect of the used antioxidants. Conclusion: β-carotene and hesperidin, natural antioxidants, have a protective effect against IM evoked hematological and biochemical changes. 展开更多

This study found that an extract ofNostochopsis spp. was the highest antioxidant activity to DPPH free radical between 32.1 and 87.5, the highest amount of beta-carotene was 4.71-7.09 mg/g and the highest amount of phenol in fresh edible algae extracts from Microspora was between 9.37 and 37.02 mg/g. The stability of β-carotene microcapsules using Maillard reaction products(MRPs) derived from whey protein isolate(WPI) and galactose as coating materials, was studied under the varying environmental conditions of temperature, pH, air, incandescent light, and ultraviolet(UV) light.Scanning electron microscopy showed that microcapsules prepared by WPI-galactose MRPs displayed a smooth and less concave-convex surface and that the particle size(D_(50)) of the microcapsules made with WPI-galactose MRPs was smaller than those made with WPI-galactose mixture.The storage stability of β-carotene microencapsulated in WPI-galactose MRPs was remarkably better than that of β-carotene microencapsulated in the WPI-galactose mixture and that of β-carotene crystal, in respect of temperature, pH, air, incandescent light, and UV light measurements.When the storage temperature was increased from 5 to 105 ℃, the retention rate of β-carotene microcapsules significantly decreased(P〈0.05).When p H values were increased from 1 to 12, the β-carotene retention rate of the microcapsules significantly increased and afterward decreased.Compared with the retention rate of β-carotene microencapsulated in a WPI-galactose mixture, the retention rate of β-carotene microencapsulated in WPI-galactose MRPs was at a maximum between pH 8 and 9.Under the actions of air, incandescent light, and UV light, the retention rates of β-carotene microcapsules in WPI-galactose MRPs and WPI-galactose mixture, as well as in β-carotene crystal, decreased significantly as the storage time increased(P〈0.05).Therefore, the use of WPI-galactose MRPs as coating materials can aid in improving the storage stability of β-carotene microcapsules. 展开更多

Plants are the ultimate source of nutrients in the human diet. To ensure adequate availability of high quality food for an increasing world population, traits including improved tolerance of stresses and nutrient levels need to be selected in crops, both individually and in combination. Here we report the identification of SIMX1 encoding a MIXTA-like MYB transcription factor in tomato that simultaneously modulates drought resistance and metabolic processes through regulating key structural and regulatory genes of the corre- sponding pathways. Over-expression of SIMX1 results in substantially increased drought tolerance and improved fruit quality, while knocking down SIMX1 resulted in the opposite phenotypes. Our study indicates an effective way with multiplebeneficial traits by genetic engineering of a single regulatory gene and can be a novel approach to breeding crops. 展开更多
