Oxidative stress plays an essential role in cell injury during islet isolation and transplantation procedures. Antioxidants have been used in various studies to improve islet transplantation procedures. The present study reviews the role of oxidative stress and the benefits of antioxidants in islet transplantation procedures. The bibliographical databases Pubmed and Scopus were searched up to November 2008. All relevant human and animal in-vivo and in-vitro studies, which investigated antioxidants on islets, were included. Almost all the tested antioxidants used in the in-vitro studies enhanced islet viability and insulin secretion. Better control of blood glucose after transplantation was the major outcome of antioxidant therapy in all in-vivo studies. The data also indicated that antioxidants improved islet transplantation procedures. Although there is still insuffi cient evidence to draw definitive conclusions about the efficacy of individual supplements, the benefi ts of antioxidants in islet isolation procedures cannot be ignored.展开更多

Methods Sections from autopsied coronary arteries and myocardium of dead patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetics mellitus and 12 dead control subjects were used for histomorphometric studies. Results The coronary atherosclerotic lesion in diabetics patients was not different in severity fi'om those in controls. Nor was there difference in number ofmyofibers or diameters of myoeardic fibers and capillaries. But the capillary density and the ratio of capillary number to myocardic fiber number in diabetics group were significeantly reduced compared with control group(P〈0.0 l),and the capillary basement membrane in the former was significantly thicker than in the latter(P〈0.01).Conclision The decrease in number of capillaries and the thickening of basement membrane enhance myocardiac vulnerability to further ischemia and hypoxia, which may undelie high lethality of myocardiopathy in diabetic patients.展开更多

Patients were referred to the LMttS (Licking Memorial Health Systems) Outpatient Medication Therapy Insulin Clinic by their physician during the time periods of July 2012 through March 2013 and August 2014 through December 2014. Physician authorization permitted pharmacists to provide clinical monitoring in order to evaluate and adjust insulin, GLP-I agonist and amylin mimetic doses by adhering to approved dosing guidelines and policy and procedures. Hemoglobin Atc values were obtained from the patients electronic medical records. Patients achieved an average decrease in HbAlc of 0.8 percentage points over a mean of 83 days. Pharmacist insulin management is an innovative pharmacy service through which clinical pharmacists can have an impact on patients' HbAtc.展开更多
