Method: The anatomical structure and physio-pathological characteristics of the spine have been studied by using modern scientific knowledge, such as, anatomy, image, biomechanics and pathophysiology. Results: The spine and its surrounding muscles and ligaments, the whole spine, spine and nerves, vessels in between intervertebral foramen as well as the spinal cord within the spinal canal, and spine, pelvis and the lower limbs all constitute an organic whole. Conclusion: The TCM holistic view in bones and tendons, spine, spine- nerve-vessel-spinal cord and spine-pelvis-lower limbs are still guiding the clinical practice of spinal manipulations.展开更多

Methods: Totally 106 patients with thoracic facet joint disorder were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group based on the random number table. Patients in the control group were treated by tuina manipulation, while those in the observation group were treated by acupuncture at Jiaji (EX-B 2) points before tuina manipulation. Patients in the two groups were treated once a day. The improvements of signs and symptoms and the efficacy were observed after 3 treatments. Results: After treatment, there were intra-group statistical differences in scores of 8 signs and symptoms in both groups (P〈0.01}; the score of each item in the observation group was lower than that in the control group, and there was statistical significance in the inter-group difference (P〈0.05). The cure rate of the observation group was 50.9%, versus 26.4% in the control group, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P〈0.05). Conclusion: In treating thoracic facet joint disorder, acupuncture plus tuina manipulation can restore the biomechanical balance of thoracic vertebrae, fully maximized the combined effect, and significantly improve the clinical efficacy.展开更多

Ten days made one course. After the continuous treatment for six courses, the therapeutic effects were summarized and the changes in the clinical symptoms and signs were observed. 〈br〉 Results:During treatment, 7 cases dropped off. In 42 patients who had completed treatment for six courses, the results showed clinical recovery in 16 cases, remarkable effect in 13 cases, effect in 7 cases and failure in 6 cases. The measurements of the patients were all improved in different degrees than those before treatment. Moreover, no side effect was noticed during treatment. 〈br〉 Conclusion:The therapeutic effect is precise and free of adverse reaction in treatment of AS by fire-needle therapy plus tuina manipulations.展开更多

Subtle adjustment of the cervical spine combined with Shu Jing Ding Xuan (Neck-relaxing and Dizziness-alleviating) Decoction was used for patients in the treatment group, whereas subtle adjustment alone was used for patients in the control group. The results in the two groups were statistically analyzed after two courses of treatment. 〈br〉 Results:The recovery rate and total effective rate in the treatment group were 20.6%and 88.2%respectively, versus 14.7%and 73.5%in the control group. The inter-group differences were statistically significant (both P<0.01). 〈br〉 Conclusion: Subtle adjustment of the cervical spine combined with Shu Jing Ding Xuan (Neck-relaxing and Dizziness-alleviating) Decoction is better than subtle adjustment alone for cervical vertigo.展开更多

Methods: Sixty eligible FMS patients were randomized into two groups, 30 in each group. Patients in the observation group were intervened by tuina manipulations to the corresponding segment of the spine based on the detection of disorders of the spine-related bones and tendons; patients in the control group were directed to practice functional exercises. Before and after intervention, the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) and visual analogue scale (VAS) were adopted for evaluation. Results: After intervention, the FIQ and VAS scores dropped significantly in both groups (all P〈O.05), and there were significant differences between the two groups (both P〈0.05). The total effective rate was 86.7% in the observation group versus 63.3% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P〈0.05). Conclusion: Spinal tuina manipulations are effective and safe in treating FMS, for significantly promoting the quality of life of the FMS patients.展开更多
In addition to conventional palpation method, examination on vertebral range of motion(ROM) and mobility can help to determine a pathological displacement and thus provide solid basis for spinal tuina manipulation.

Methods: Healthy young male volunteers were selected as subjects of the trial. The upper cervical spine (C2-5) was stimulated bilaterally with spinal manipulation, and changes in heart rate and heart rate variability were calculated as measures of effects on autonomic nervous system tone. Results: Thirty healthy young male volunteers were tested. It was found that heart rate decreased (R-R interval prolonged) significantly. SDNN and total power spectrum increased significantly, indicating an increase in sympathetic tone. Conclusion: Cervical manipulation can regulate the autonomic nervous system tone in healthy young men, and it suggests a possibility of treating cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia with cervical manipulation.展开更多

Methods: Tuina plus traction was applied to 40 teenagers with cervical distortion once every other day, and 10 days make up 1 treatment course. The therapeutic effect was evaluated after 2 courses. Result: Significant changes occurred after the treatment: 15 cases got correction, 20 cases got substantial improvement and 5 cases got certain improvement. Conclusion: Tuina plus traction works effectively for abnormal cervical physiological curve in teenagers.展开更多
