LPPC is an innovative process since it does not require any surface coating that is formed prior to laser irradiation in conventional laser peening for preventing the surface from melting. Surface residual stress of various metal materials was converted from tensile to compressive by LPPC. High cycle fatigue property was remarkably improved for steels, aluminum alloys and titanium alloys. Accelerating stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests showed that LPPC completely prevents SCC of sensitized austenitic stainless steels, nickel-based alloys and their weld metals. LPPC has been utilized to combat against SCC in Japanese nuclear power reactors since 1999.展开更多

The results indicate that with the increase of second-step aging time of two-step aging, the mechanical properties increase first and then decrease, while the SCC resistance increases. Compared with two-step aging, three-step aging treatment improves SCC resistance and the strength increases by about 5%. The effects of novel three-step aging on strength and SCC resistance are explained by the role of matrix precipitates and grain boundary precipitates, respectively.展开更多

The alloy which contains zirconium instead of chromium showed ultra fine structures with stable subgrains after warm rolling at 350 ℃, followed by solution heat treatment at 480 ℃. The average subgrain diameter was approximately 3 pan. It became clear that zirconium in solution has the effect of stabilizing subgrains due to precipitation of fine Al3Zr compounds during warm rolling. On the other hand, chromium-bearing compounds precipitate before warm rolling and they grow up to relatively large size during warm rolling. The warm rolled sheets with fine subgrains have unique properties compared with conventional 7475 aluminum alloy sheets produced by cold rolling. The warm roiled sheets solution heat treated had subgrain structures through the thickness with a high proportion of low-angle boundary less than 15°. The strength of the warm rolled sheets in T6 condition was about 10% higher than that of conventional 7475 aluminum alloy sheets. As the most remarkable point in the warm rolled sheets, the high Lankford (r) value of 3.5 was measured in the orientation of 45° to rolling direction, with the average r-value of 2.2. The high r-value would be derived from well developed r-fiber textures, especially with the strong {011 }(211) brass component. The warm rolled sheets also had high resistance to SCC. From Kikuchi lines analysis and TEM images, it was found that PFZs were hardly formed along the low- angle boundaries of the warm rolled sheets in T6 condition. This would be a factor to lead to the improvement of resistance to SCC because of reducing the difference in electrochemical property between the grain boundary area and the grain interior.展开更多

The general corrosion resistance of these alloys was examined using immersion corrosion and potentiodynamic polarization tests, while the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance was evaluated by slow strain rate test (SSRT) method. The tested samples were further characterized by SEM-EDS and optical profilometry to study the change in corrosion morphology, elemental content and depth of corrosion attack. The reduction in ductility was used as a parameter to evaluate the SCC susceptibility of the alloys. The results indicated that the corrosion resistance of AA2195 alloy was better than that of AA2219 alloy as it exhibited lower corrosion rate, along with lower pit depth and density. However, the SCC index (εNaCl/εair) measured was greater than 0.90, indicating good environmental cracking resistance of both the alloys. Detailed fractography of the failed samples under SEM?EDS, in general, revealed a typical ductile cracking morphology for both the alloys.展开更多

SCC is most often rapid, unpredictable. Failure can occur in a short time as a few hours or take years and decades to happen. Most alloys are liable to SCC in one or more environments requiring careful consideration of alloy type in component design. In aqueous chloride environments austenitic stainless steels and many nickel based alloys are common to perform poorly. SCC of austenitic stainless steels of types 316 was investigated as a function of applied stress at room temperature in sodium chloride solutions using a constant load method. The experiment uses a spring loaded fixture type and is based on ASTM G49 for experiment method, and E292 for geometry of notched specimen. The stress depends on fracture appearance and parameters of time to cracking, and cracking growth. The results explained in terms of comparison between the two concentrations of sodium chloride solutions.展开更多
