Its initial presentation is typically asymptomatic. Pathological characteristics are unspecific, and generally attributed to inflammation, unless the diagnosis is suspected. Laparoscopy done for other reasons has been, as in this case, unsuccessful in providing evidence for the correct diagnosis, thus requiring laparotomy due to lack of diagnostic tissue. After 6 mo no further medical therapy is required, as the patient remains asymptomatic. Discussion of this case and a brief review of the literature are presented in the following paragraphs.展开更多

METHODS: Fifteen IBS patients fulfilling the Rome II criteria, and nine healthy volunteers were included in the study. A combined lipidomics (UPLC/MS) and metabolomics (GC × GC-TOF) approach was used to achieve global metabolic profiles of mucosal biopsies from the ascending colon. RESULTS: Overall, lipid levels were elevated in patients with IBS. The most significant upregulation was seen for pro-inflammatory lysophosphatidylcholines. Other lipid groups that were significantly upregulated in IBS patients were lipotoxic ceramides, glycosphingolipids, and di-and triacylglycerols. Among the meo tabolites, the cyclic ester 2(3H)-furanone was almost 14-fold upregulated in IBS patients compared to healthy subjects (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: IBS mucosa is characterised by a distinct pro-inflammatory and lipotoxic metabolic profile. Especially, there was an increase in several lipid species such as lysophospholipids and ceramides.展开更多

This is a rare description of tuberculosis in the setting of PSCP.This report illustrates the potential complex nature of malignancies, and emphasizes the need to consider coexistence of malignancy and infection in patients, especially in those with risk factors for malignancy who fail with antibiotic therapy.展开更多

Methods The expression of FLIP was assessed in 11 JIA and 3 normal synovial tissue samples by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. The cell types expressing FLIP were further characterized, and the correlation of FLIP expression with the degree of synovial inflammation,as well as the activity of caspase 8 was then analyzed. Results RT-PCR revealed the expression of FLIP mRNA in all 11 JIA samples, but not in 3 normal synovial tissues. In JIA,FLIP expression could be found in both the lining and sublining layers, mainly in the macrophage-like cells. Moreover, the expression of FLIP in JIA synovial tissues was positively correlated with the degree of synovial inflammation (r=0.563,P<0.05). Conclusion The expression of antiapoptotic FLIP in JIA synovial tissue and its correlation to accumulation of inflammatory cells in synovial tissue suggests that FLIP potentially extends the lifespan of synovial cells and thus contributes to the progression of joint destruction.展开更多

Leukocyte DNA of 92 RP patients were collected in Hong Kong. Sequence changes of the entire coding region of the RP1 gene were examined using PCR, conformation sensitive gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing.Results. In total, 1 nonsense mutation and 1 nonsense variant as well as 10 missense alterations were identified in the RP1 gene, among which, Arg677Ter was found in 1 RP patient and another nonsense variant, Argl933Ter, was identified in 3 normal individuals and 1 patient with Stargardt' s disease, suggesting its nonpathogenicity. Arg677Ter is expected to lead to large disruptions of the encoded protein.Conclusions. The nonpathogenicity of Argl933Ter indicates that the C - terminal 224 residues of RPl protein may be not critical for RP1. The most C - terminal truncation previously reported was due to Tyr1053 (1 -bp del) and occurred in RP patients. Thus RP can be caused by reduction in the level of the region of RPl protein after codon 1052 but before 1933. To ascertain such a proposition, genotypes of more RP patients may reveal more RP causative mutations and more sequence alterations different than those of other ethnic groups.展开更多
