Data derives from a food consumption survey on organic and non-organic consumers conducted in Buenos Aires City, Argentina, in April 2005.The Lancaster model (1966) provided the theoretical basis. The results yielded by the estimated logistic model suggest that consumers with higher educational level, who eat healthy food, and consider food control organisms as "inefficient" are more likely to buy organic products. A high percentage of consumers read and trust label information in Argentina. This has interesting policy implications to promote differentiated and high value products, and to reduce information asymmetries.展开更多

The aim of this work is to study the histology of this cladoceran by light microscopy so as to expand the knowledge of this species. The parthenogenetic females were fixed in formaldehyde 4%. Sections were cut 3 μm thick and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin. The intestine has simple cuboidal epithelium with apical projections and the cells have 1 or 2 nucleoli in their nuclei. Two compound eyes were found and no naupliar ocelum. The ovary is saccular and it is presented in a pair at both sides of the intestine with follicles in different states of development. The striated muscle with notorious microfibrills is recognized in antennas, antennules and trunk appendices. This article may represent the first detailed description of the histology of this species.展开更多

Under a dictatorship, usually works are censored and cannot be published or see the light until the regime falls. This was the case for almost 30 years since the 1830s in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the government of Rosas, the Restorer. Three works by Esteban Echeverria and oils and engravings of several artists of the period will be compared to see how ekphrasis the communication between arts, is evident. At that time, the beginning of romanticism in literature, writers were interested in depicting reality according to their point of view. These influences had been studied for a very long time especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Tandil and Bahia Blanca are middle cities of Argentina located in the south of Buenos Aires province. Both present continental template climate. The aim of this research is to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of precipitation and the rainwater pH values for the period October 2010-September 2011 in Tandil and Bahia Blanca. Gauge rain nets were installed in both cities. In each event of precipitation, amount and pH values were collected. Isohyets plotting were included in the thematic cartography that was made using ArcGis 9.3~ software. Although natural rains are generally considered as being weakly acid, the rainwater pH measurements demonstrated that in both cities the rain is alkaline. Regarding to the spatial distribution of the precipitation amounts, the isohyets of the annual records showed that the highest values were registered in areas of higher elevation while the lowest values were presented in both cities downtown, where the high buildings are concentrated.展开更多

We have taken a particular case which happened in the province and the autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina during the second week of December 2010. Such circumstances were in opposition to housing rights and property. We selected a sample of three evening news (two private and one public) Telenoche, Telefe News, and Vision 7, with the intention of establishing a line of comparison in both media, and thereby recognizing the differences in patterns of representation the news. From the analysis of data, we realize the ways in which TV News defined the citizen complaint.展开更多

The Latin phrase means "from the perspective of eternity". Eternity is the way God sees the universe, not as a succession of moments in time from past, to present, to future, but as a simultaneous present which includes the past and future as if they are already and always present. This temporal simultaneity is accompanied by a spatial totality and simultaneity. In both Chaucer and Dante the protagonist ends life's wanderings and struggles by being carried up into the heavens and looking back on earth from the point of view of eternity. Their literary source is Maerobius' Commentary on the Dream of Scipio and Boethius' The Consolation of Philosophy. The vision results in epistemological transformation that provides consolation or "contemptus mundi", the rejection of earthly concems. The "sub specie aetemitatis" vision is both a revelation of the nature of the universe, time, and the protagonist's place in them and a disillusionment that radically changes the protagonist's understanding. The work of literature and the reading of it are potentially transformational. For the pagan lover Toilus in Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde the "sub specie aeternitatis" vision results in religious conversion as well as epistemological transformation. Boethius, whom Chaucer translated, offers an analogue to the vision in the way humans perceive a sphere through their senses and reason. Dante's version of the vision in Paradiso xxxiii is the most famous literary example as the protagonist's vision merges with the vision of God as an intense ray of light. The conversion and consolation associated with the "sub specie aetemitatis" vision takes cosmic dimension in Dante. A modem example is Jorge Luis Borges' parody of Dante in his story "The Aleph" where a satiric vision takes place not in the heavens but in the basement of the house in Buenos Aires. In Cervantes' Don Quixote the "sub specie aetemitatis" trope is present by its deliberate omission, and yet performs the functions of epistemological conversion, transformation, and consolation in Don Quixote's death. One brief sleep and Don Quixote passes from dreaming (in Borges' sense of the word) a reality from the fantasy of his books of chivalry to a tree reality, similar to the conversion Troilus experiences from the sorrow of love to the pure felicity of heaven. With Don Quixote and the realist novel the "sub specie aetemitatis" vision may seem bound for extinction, at least with its cosmological apparatus of heavenly spheres, but it finds new form in the ending of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. The final reading of Melquiades's parchments reveals that the sequential events of the novel exist as if in a simultaneous moment, like God's eternity, embracing all time and space in one, before the vision vanishes forever.展开更多

The Spanish pilots were initially excluded by the Moroccan War, which demanded all available air forces be used to put an end to the conflict. Motivated by the successes of The Alhucemas amphibious landing, one of best Spanish aviators, Major Ramon Franco presented to the Government in 1925 a project to undertake a flight to Argentina across the South Atlantic Ocean in a DornierJ Wal seaplane. In the memorandum, Franco said: The Spain-Argentina flight would be a worthwhile trial and verification of air navigation. It would also serve to let the entire world know of the merits of our Aviation and allow us to occupy the aeronautical place that belongs to us in aeronautics. It would also help us strengthen our ties with our brothers at the other side of the ocean. The DornierJ Walwas named "Plus Ultra" referring to the Discovery of America. The route should be Palos de la Frontera-Las Palmas de Gran Canaria-Cape Verde islands-Fernando Noronha island-Pernambuco-Rio de Janeiro-Montevideo and Buenos Aires. Franco reasoned that the best time of year to make the flight was from December to April. The raid started in the city Palos de la Frontera on 22 January 1926 and ended in Buenos Aires on February 9, after flying 10,825 kilometers in 59 hours and 48 minutes.展开更多

A binomial logit model was estimated using data from a consumer survey conducted in Buenos Aires City, Argentina. Willingness to pay is explained by the consumption of organic products, health risk perceptions, concerns about production processes and also regulation issues, and label reading. The WTP calculation reveals a mean value of 21.4%/kg and a median value of 19%/kg. These results indicate that organic chicken is positively valued by consumers. In fact, it provides the nutritional and product origin information that buyers require and they consider it a safer option than conventional chicken.展开更多

Monitoring NPP is useful for studying ecological responses to human management. The values of NPP and C input in periurban agroecosystems are insufficient or missing. The objective was to use local databases to estimate NPP and C input in periurban areas(south, north and west) of Buenos Aires City, Argentina, using different biosolids application scenarios(low and high effects). The NPP varied with crop and vegetable types(P < 0.05), with maize(Zea mays) and wheat(Triticum aestivum) presenting the highest production, soybean(Glycine max) medium and sunflower(Helianthus annuus) the lowest. Tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) presented the highest production in the south area(La Plata). West and north areas, where Vertic and Typic Argiudolls are the main soils, presented the lowest NPP and C input. According to the low and high effect scenarios, only vegetables presented significant differences(P < 0.05) in average and cumulative NPP and C input between areas. Vegetables contributed with the highest proportion(> 70%) to NPP in both projected scenarios. For both scenarios, average C input by crops and vegetables presented similar proportions. Biosolids addition in periurban agroecosystems could be a viable practice to elevate NPP and C input.展开更多
