中文“龙”的英法译文与中华龙文化的跨文化传播

龙文化作为中国所特有的文化现象,长期以来都不能被西方人真正理解。在涉及"龙"的英、法翻译时,译者的第一反应通常是"dragon",但是中文中的"龙"与英文及法文中的"dragon"在内涵和意象上是完全不同的,如何翻译"龙"在中华龙文化的跨文化传播中至关重要。要利用多种媒体向西方介绍、宣传中华龙文化;要掌控龙文化传播中的翻译权利;要清理纠正有关双语词典中一切有关中华龙文化的错误的翻译。

On Chinese translation of English movie titles

The translation of titles is the important part in the translation of movies. This paper proposes three principles and summarizes six translation methods in the translation of movie titles.

Critical analysis on turn-taking organization in English news interview in China

As a special type ofconversation, news interview, its special turn-taking organization founds the basic conversation pattern. This paper tries to explore something hidden behind people turn-taking, i.e., the influence of power, ideology on language use except the cooperation. The researches showed the IR and IE obey the rules of turn-taking system under the Q-A format. In the news interview, the disagreement between interviewees is direct and usually ended by the interviewer with institutional power. And in the process, the influence of the power and ideology on the turn-taking is reflected clearly： The IR with the institutional role, he or she can interrupt or insert their turn-taking to control, direct the talk as intended plan.

The Role of Non-verbal Behavior of Teachers in Providing Students Corrective Feedback and Their Consequences

Considering the primary focus of corrective feedback literature on verbal-correction provided by teachers and lack of attention to the role of other forms of corrective feedback in FL （foreign language） classroom interaction, this paper demonstrates how essential teachers＇ non-verbal communication and stance display are in making students＇ errors noticeable for them by providing samples from videotaped data. The findings in this study provide insights into the use of non-verbal behavior in providing students with corrective feedback. This study shows that research dealing only with verbal corrections provided by FL teachers cannot fully define the classroom interaction in terms of teachers＇ use of error correction techniques and student notification and uptake.

A Research on Bilingual Dictionary Based Sentence Alignment for Chinese English Parallel Corpus

Parallel corpus is of great importance to machine translation, and automatic sentence alignment is the first step towards its processing. This paper puts forward a bilingual dictionary based sentence alignment method for Chinese English parallel corpus, which differs from previous length based algorithm in its knowledge-rich approach. Experimental result shows that this method produces over 93% accuracy with usual English-Chinese dictionaries whose translations cover 31 88%～47 90% of the corpus.

Traditional and Computer-Based Evaluation of Preschoolers＇ Oral Language in Greek A Review of the Literature

The purpose of this study is to examine and present the procedures and the tools that are described in the literature for observing preschool children＇s communication competence. Informal and formal standardised testing activities are included and a distinction is made on traditional and computer-based screening and diagnosis. The results of study illustrate the current trends of the literature and discuss the possibility of the computer-based screening and diagnosis to partially make up for the expert-personnel shortage

A study on pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication

Through analyzing and comparing the anecdotes of pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication from the aspects of lexicon, syntax and discourse, some pragmatic strategies are suggested in intercultural communication. To improve learners＇ cultural awareness and communicative competence, a cultural-linguistic approach in foreign language teaching should be adopted.

A generic analysis of English Research Article abstracts and the use of modal verbs for financial economics

This paper is a generic study of schematic structures and the use of modal verbs of 50 English Research Article （RA） abstracts. With Bhatia＇s （1990） model as the framework, three other move patterns were obtained besides the normal move order. The density of modal verbs varies greatly from move to move with significant differences in the frequency of occurrence in different moves. The use of modal verbs is much more move-determined than discipline-determined.

WEB BASED TRANSLATION OF CHINESE ORGANIZATION NAME

A web-based translation method for Chinese organization name is proposed.After ana-lyzing the structure of Chinese organization name,the methods of bilingual query formulation and maximum entropy based translation re-ranking are suggested to retrieve the English translation from the web via public search engine.The experiments on Chinese university names demonstrate the validness of this approach.

Understanding and improving online statistical translation method

Companies like Google, MSN and Yahoo provide translation services on their websites, generating translations based on statistical bilingual text corpora. Human translation seems to be inferior in face of huge amount of information and fast development of computer science. Despite the functions and versatility of statistical machine translation, it may never take the place of human effort. Teachers are supposed to guide the students in using online translation system.

An Analysis of Errors in College English Writing in China

This paper first explores the importance and significance of college English writing in China, then the current problems and the main reasons in teaching Chinese college students. The author classifies the main errors that Chinese college students always commit in detail, gives the analysis of errors referring to the error analysis theory, puts forward the principles and methods that both Chinese teachers and Chinese college students can use, finally talks about the analytical significance and how to improve Chinese college students＇ writing abilities.

Translation and Evaluation of Chinese Version of the Inventory of School Motivation

This paper describes the development of a Chinese version of the ISM （Inventory of School Motivation）. Forward and backward translation strategies are used. Further, rigorous evaluation procedures are conducted to compare the form and meaning of the original English version and the back-translated version. The translation procedures ensure that the Chinese version is as equivalent as possible to the English version. Grammatical and syntactical issues with translation will be discussed in the paper.

Teacher-Retraining Course Design Renewal

Teacher-retraining course design is considered to be a challenge not only to the course participants but to the course designers as well, especially, when the participants enrolled turn out to have dramatically different professional background and conditions. This article supports the idea that changes to the course design should be made straightaway in response to the trainees＇ specific needs. The context for rural school teacher retraining at Novosibirsk State Technical University in Russia illustrates reasons for making immediate changes necessary as the course progressed, and reaction to them. The article discusses a model for a teacher retraining course in which EFL improvement is the core element.

Postmodemity of HAN Dong＇s Poetry

With the influence ofpostmodernism, ＂Third Generation＂ poetry rushes out of elite literature and makes Chinese new poetry focus on everyday life of common persons. As one of the most important representatives of ＂Third Generation＂ poets, HAN Dong has created many distinct postmodernist poems. Rejecting metaphor and symbolization, he takes an oral language of original ecology as his poetical discourse mode to affirm the everyday life of here and now, and then both deconstruct metaphoric and symbolic writing of＂Misty Poetry＂ and construct a writing mode of ＂aestheticization of life＂. HAN Dong＇s poetry can be taken as a kind of construction in deconstruction.

Teaching Translation Studies at the University of Western Australia and Relevant Implications Observed

This paper introduces the second semester teaching of the two-year course （Master of Translation Studies） in the University of Western Australia （UWA）. The author gives a detailed review of four translation units, those being the ones related to just the Chinese and English two way parts that she attended. The author＇s comments and students＇ feedback are included. Three main questions are answered in this article. They are： What are the popular translation teaching methods to achieve the learning outcomes？ What are the implications for how to minimize the use of Chinglish~ （Chinese English） in Chinese-English translation？ And also, what translation teaching methods used at UWA can be adopted in the Chinese College English classroom to better develop non-English-majored college students＇ translation competence？ The paper concludes by summarizing that to minimize the use of Chinglish and improve translation competence, developing the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking is indispensable.

Problems in Chinese Teachers＇ Instructional Discourse --From the Perspective of Authenticity

In the English language classroom, authenticity is a basic discoursal feature of teachers＇ instructional discourse. Without authenticity, there will be a mismatch between what students learn in the classroom and what they use in real life. However, the notion of authenticity varies with the change between the natural mode and pedagogic mode in the classroom. Therefore, based on this assumption, retrieving and analyzing data from the corpus and classroom videos, the present paper identifies two categories of problems in Chinese teachers＇ instructional discourse. Sample extracts are discussed and predictions are made on how teachers＇ failure to produce authentic discourse may result in ineffective teaching and learning.

Analyzing Culture of Learning and Teaching in the Iranian Secondary Schools English Language Course Books： Prospect

Knowing and analyzing the ＂culture of learning and teaching＂ in a coursebook or series of course books can contribute to teachers＇ and students＇ success in the educational and pedagogical goals and objectives. Cultures of learning and teaching refer to the perspectives of teachers and learners towards learning and teaching. Most of the research studies conducted in this field have referred to values and attitudes related to good learning and teaching as reflected through observations, interviews and questionnaires. However, just few studies have examined this term with regard to language teaching materials, and course books. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to introduce, investigate, and analyze the cultures of learning and teaching in Iranian secondary school course books entitled Prospect series. Based on the model used in this study, the cultures of learning and teaching in Prospect series were investigated as reflected in their external features including aims and objectives cited in the introduction, tables of content, and layout of the students＇ books, and internal features including task instructions and visual images in students＇ book plus the instructions in the teacher＇s book. Each of these features as well as the pedagogical issues of the Prospect series were provided and elaborated.

＂Flipped Class Model＂ Applied to Translation Class

With the development of computer technology, the way of language teaching has experienced great changes. In the past the methods of language teaching mainly focus on the direct method, the grammar-translation, audio-lingual, the structure approach, communicative language teaching, community language learning, task-based language learning, etc. These methods start and develop with the need and application of some theories. Now at the present time the computer is widely used in every field and the Internet is compulsory of daily life. So the ways of teaching language is changing accordingly. This paper is to analyze the new way of language teaching, the flipped class model. The first part is the general introduction of the flipped class model, and the second part is the application of the flipped class model to translation course.

Re-evaluating the Question of Standardization of Nigerian English

It is difficult to deny the existence of Nigerian English, just as it is difficult to deny the existence of British English and American English. This claim arises from the fact that what characterizes a people＇s linguistic norm takes its rise from the totality of the people＇s sociocultural practices of which meaningful verbal sounds are of great essence. The meaningful verbal sounds serve as the chief instrument for communicating meanings, feelings, ideas, and abstractions. Whereas the existence of Nigerian English is no doubt, what constitutes its standard variety has been under contestation. In this write up, argument on standardization of Nigerian English is built-up on the basis of the various stages which the language has passed through and is still passing through in Nigeria. Argumentatively, standard variety of Nigerian English is identified and examined with the aim of demonstrating how efforts in standardizing it are made through empirically reliable criteria.

Characteristics Determine Fate --An Analysis of Tess＇ Tragedy in Tess of the D ＇Urbervilles

Tess of the D ＇Urbervilles is one of the most famous novels of Thomas Hardy. Tess--the heroine brings us deep inspiration and profound reflection. And the author Thomas Hardy describes the impacts of the industrial civilization on a village panoramically, then Tess as an individual miniature, further shows the people struggle in the plight of the struggle in the material. Tess is difficult to be recognized by the society, which makes her realize the hypocrisy of bourgeois society and the distortion of ethics. Briefly in this paper, the author tries to find out the causes of the tragedy of Tess by analyzing the characteristics of Tess and the male characters in Tess＇ life and make people have a better understanding of the literary work.
