This paper tries to explore something hidden behind people turn-taking, i.e., the influence of power, ideology on language use except the cooperation. The researches showed the IR and IE obey the rules of turn-taking system under the Q-A format. In the news interview, the disagreement between interviewees is direct and usually ended by the interviewer with institutional power. And in the process, the influence of the power and ideology on the turn-taking is reflected clearly: The IR with the institutional role, he or she can interrupt or insert their turn-taking to control, direct the talk as intended plan. 展开更多

Considering the primary focus of corrective feedback literature on verbal-correction provided by teachers and lack of attention to the role of other forms of corrective feedback in FL (foreign language) classroom interaction, this paper demonstrates how essential teachers' non-verbal communication and stance display are in making students' errors noticeable for them by providing samples from videotaped data. The findings in this study provide insights into the use of non-verbal behavior in providing students with corrective feedback. This study shows that research dealing only with verbal corrections provided by FL teachers cannot fully define the classroom interaction in terms of teachers' use of error correction techniques and student notification and uptake. 展开更多

This paper puts forward a bilingual dictionary based sentence alignment method for Chinese English parallel corpus, which differs from previous length based algorithm in its knowledge-rich approach. Experimental result shows that this method produces over 93% accuracy with usual English-Chinese dictionaries whose translations cover 31 88%~47 90% of the corpus. 展开更多

The density of modal verbs varies greatly from move to move with significant differences in the frequency of occurrence in different moves. Without authenticity, there will be a mismatch between what students learn in the classroom and what they use in real life. However, the notion of authenticity varies with the change between the natural mode and pedagogic mode in the classroom. Therefore, based on this assumption, retrieving and analyzing data from the corpus and classroom videos, the present paper identifies two categories of problems in Chinese teachers' instructional discourse. Knowing and analyzing the "culture of learning and teaching" in a coursebook or series of course books can contribute to teachers' and students' success in the educational and pedagogical goals and objectives. Cultures of learning and teaching refer to the perspectives of teachers and learners towards learning and teaching. Most of the research studies conducted in this field have referred to values and attitudes related to good learning and teaching as reflected through observations, interviews and questionnaires. However, just few studies have examined this term with regard to language teaching materials, and course books. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to introduce, investigate, and analyze the cultures of learning and teaching in Iranian secondary school course books entitled Prospect series. Based on the model used in this study, the cultures of learning and teaching in Prospect series were investigated as reflected in their external features including aims and objectives cited in the introduction, tables of content, and layout of the students' books, and internal features including task instructions and visual images in students' book plus the instructions in the teacher's book. This claim arises from the fact that what characterizes a people's linguistic norm takes its rise from the totality of the people's sociocultural practices of which meaningful verbal sounds are of great essence. The meaningful verbal sounds serve as the chief instrument for communicating meanings, feelings, ideas, and abstractions. Whereas the existence of Nigerian English is no doubt, what constitutes its standard variety has been under contestation. In this write up, argument on standardization of Nigerian English is built-up on the basis of the various stages which the language has passed through and is still passing through in Nigeria.
