This paper first presents a general review of previous studies on presupposition phenomena in advertising language, then investigates the use of presuppositions in advertising language by both qualitative and quantitative analyses. By considering China′s urbanization as a ′testing ground′ of ′western′ theories, these studies are important for the understanding of China′s ongoing urban restructuring and exchanging knowledge with ′western′ insights. Based on a survey of existing studies, this paper identifies various endogenous and exogenous concepts and explanations of China′s urbanization. It is suggested that China′s urbanization is mainly driven by a combination of political decentralization and neoliberalization with various forms of social stratification and mobility. However, it is argued that the distinctness of the ′China Model′, which is usually used to support the legitimacy of studies of China′s urbanization, has led to many controversial arguments and diminished the due contributions of Chinese scholars in the knowledge production of China′s urbanization. To consolidate the legitimacy of studies on China′s urbanization and enhance the roles of Chinese scholars, we suggest future studies to pay more attentions to the fundamental theories with looser constraints and ′true questions′ on China′s urbanization.展开更多

Moreover, the findings also indicate that the washback of CET-4 writing is weakened by other sections of the test.展开更多

People tend to believe that it is simply easy for Chinese students to excel academically at US universities, but this is not necessarily true, especially for students fresh from China. Based on a survey of Chinese students studying at US universities and interviews with American professors, this essay reveals Chinese students' academic frustrations and struggles that have been overlooked due to their high scores, and points out that it is the mismatch between Chinese and American teaching and learning styles that leads to this difficulty. Furthermore, this essay concludes with the author providing suggestions for both Chinese and American educators to help future Chinese students make the most of their higher education opportunity at American universities.展开更多

This paper is designed to offer genre-based methods to Chinese teachers of English concemiug teaching the college-level writing of the introduction for academic papers. It argues that genre-based teaching approaches can teach students to write in terms of move structures or conventional sections of academic papers (Swales, 1990) and its underlying motivation which not only makes students aware of the stylistic features of introductions but provides them with the strategies to reproduce these features in their own writing. The teaching approaches proposed in this paper include modes for teachers to present the findings of generic analysis of research article introductions as well as task-based activities for students' practice.展开更多

A language carries cultural message of a nation, which reflects the historical and cultural background of this nation, as well as people's thinking, social behavior and lifestyle. Culture records the social development and changes while social development and changes in a variety of things and phenomena will get accumulated and reflected in the language. In the collision of Indian culture and American English, Indian culture has left a deep imprint on American English. American English absorbs a large number of Indian vocabulary, including the names of animals, plants, and many other aspects of social life along with compound words. This paper mainly focuses on the influence of Indian culture on American English, and analyses semantic variants from Indian language in American English, including sound, spelling, semantic and syntactical change. With the tolerance of other languages and many borrowed Indian words, American English makes the 17th century become its starting point of continuous development and evolution.展开更多

However, it does not mean that learners must abandon their own culture in order to avoid the potential cultural collision. What they need to do is to accumulate the knowledge pertaining to the target culture so as to develop cross-cultural awareness. This paper will draw on previous research in this arena as well as the author's personal knowledge to further explore the relationship between socioculture and second language acquisition from the perspectives of culture and language, cultural confrontation, and culture familiarization.展开更多
