Some are in a literary style, and others in a non-literary one. In the present paper, the stylistic features of English short messages are illustrated by applying the stylistic theory and employing the "Model of Analyzing Textual Function". The features of the two styles of messages are described and analyzed from the perspectives of their pronunciation, graphology, vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric, etc., and the stylistic features serve as the basis for discussing the translation principles and methods of English short messages.展开更多

In order to determine how text messaging has resulted in paradigm shift in the traditional uses of punctuation marks, this paper explores how punctuation marks vary with language, location, register and time, and how they are constantly evolving. The discussion in this paper is structured around Coupland's sociolinguistic theory. The findings reveal that new technology has impacted on the traditional uses of punctuation marks. Thus, the results show that the use of punctuation markers in Short Message Service (SMS) texts is complex. Moreover, the use of punctuation marks in Kenyan text messages reveals personal stylistic choices. However, it is apparent that Kenyan text messages are shaped by social variables.展开更多

An anchor-based English-Chinese bilingual chunk alignment model and the corresponding algorithm of alignment are presented in this paper. It can effectively overcome the sparse data problem due to the limited size of the bilingual corpus. In this model, the chunk segmentation disarnbiguation is delayed to the alignment process, and hence the accuracy of chunk segmentation is improved. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and viability of this model.展开更多

Nevertheless, studies on power exercised and enacted in e-mail communication within a corporation can hardly be found at home. The present study, based on the theoretical framework of power& solidarity and politeness systems (Scollon,R and Scollon, S.W. 2000), is made with an attempt to explore the power relations in e-mail exchange among staffof"upper-lower" ranks within multinational corporations in China. The study shows that, in modern multinational corporations, power is an underlying force. To mask and mystify power, we need to resort to a range of linguistic strategies such as the use of relative modality, inclusive pronoun "we/our", the selection of informal words and the preferred FN (first names) forms of addressing.展开更多

The Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) technology is therefore radically discussed by researchers for its great impacts on English language learning. Based upon thorough literature review and practical survey, this paper demonstrates modem CMC technology and textism phenomenon and makes an analysis of its significant impacts on English language learning. It aims to answer the typical blessing-or-nightmare question, and shed some light on the research of modern information communication technolo^v in lanwaa^e education.展开更多

Upon being stretched, a high density of random cracks appears in the network, which decreases the current pathways, thereby increasing the resistance. Therefore, the film could act as a strain sensor on the human throat in order to measure one's speech through muscle movement, regardless of whether or not a sound is produced. The ultra-high sensitivity allows for the realization of rapid and low-frequency speech sampling by extracting the signature characteristics of sound waves. In this study, representative signals of 26 English letters, typical Chinese characters and tones, and even phrases and sentences were tested, revealing obvious and characteristic changes in resistance. Furthermore, resistance changes of the graphene sensor responded perfectly with pre-recorded sounds. By combining artificial intelligence with digital signal processing, we expect that, in the future, this graphene sensor will be able to successfully negotiate complex acoustic systems and large quantities of audio data.展开更多

The results indicate that: First, both the teachers and students attached much importance to language, but the teachers put significantly more emphasis on organization and content whereas the students put significantly more emphasis on vocabulary;Second, the beliefs of students were heavily influenced by their conceptions of the purposes of EFL writing tasks and the assessment criteria adopted to mark their writing;Third, the disparity between teachers' and students' beliefs caused them to emphasize different aspects of an essay when giving feedback; Finally, students' beliefs had a negative impact on the development of effective writing strategies. Pedagogical implications are suggested.展开更多
