Cultural Identities of the Well-Educated Chinese Immigrant Children in the UK

Since the Reform and Opening-up in 1978, China has broadened and deepened its exchanges and relations with other countries. This has contributed to the increase in the migration of well-educated Chinese abroad and United Kingdom (UK) has become a most desirable destination for the elite Chinese immigrants. The impact of the migration of well-educated Chinese deserves particular attention and study, especially the second generation's cultural identities--this under-researched topic is the focus of this study. The study investigates the cultural identity differences between Chinese born children (CBC) and British born children (BBC) of the Chinese intellectual families living in Britain. Results indicated that both CBC and BBC had high pride in Chinese and British culture No significant evidence for cultural identity crises was found. The children investigated considered themselves as bi-culturalism and were content with "dual identities," with the CBC a bit more Chinese, while the BBC a bit more British. Much smaller differences in views of cultural identity were reported. 展开更多

In the pursuit of box office today, a good English film title translation can not only attract more attention, but also become an important standard to judge a film's value. However, the translation of English film title has not got enough attention at home or abroad, and good translations of English film titles are few and far between. This migrant community has a non-homogeneous structure owing to differences in their life styles, experiences, ideas, feelings, hopes and expectations. Therefore, Turkish Muslim immigrants have been observed living for a long time in the different ethnic, ideological, cultural and religious communities. In this paper, these immigrants' religious life and religious organizations in Britain will be focused on. The methodology of this research is based on the field research that the author did from July 9, 2012 to September 9, 2012 in London. According to the investigations, there are mainly four different Turkish Islamic tendencies in Britain. Also, there are about 10 Turkish religious organizations and 27 places of worship belonging to these Islamic discourses in Britain. 展开更多

Language is the carrier and the crystallization of culture, it is also a mirror which is reflecting the culture. Any kind of national language is always inextricably linked with the nation's culture, and any language is the reflection of the culture. Mastering a language must understand the culture of the language belongs, especially cultural differences in customs. Culture refers to cultural practices throughout society and everyday commtmication activities by the national customs form. Due to the big contrast of culture and customs between Western and Chinese, if the English learners want to grasp English, they must understand and master the differences between Chinese and Western culture, they can not speak in English with Chinese cultural communication patterns. In The Jungle Book (1894), Kipling's first literary work, the author uses Indian spatial reference and cultural influence to construct his narrative. The short story "Rikki-tikki-tavi" is elaborated using the structure of Western fables, having allegory as one of its most exploited strategies. Vladmir Propp, in Morphology of the Folktale (1929) considers that every folktale story reproduces a structure. Propp's model demonstrates Rikki-tikki-tavi's Western "frame" when the authors see how clearly and efficiently the short story fits the model of Russian Folktale. This article will analyze "Rikki-tikki-tavi" as a paradigm of this literary genre, showing how characters metaphorically represent the British domination in India during the end of the 19th century. 展开更多

In order to provide English as a foreign language students with effective English language learning approaches, this investigation is focused on how students deal with words when they are doing reading material. It is found that most students can use some skills to guess the unknown words in reading materials, such as explanatory analysis skills, syntactic analysis skills, and structural analysis skills, while they have overlooked how these words are organized metaphorically and metonymically. This investigation will provide students with the target language knowledge metaphors and metonymy, examining the impact on computer vocabulary guessing and reading comprehension through teaching the concept of metaphor and metonymy. In this research, the new word-guessing skill based on the knowledge of metaphor and metonymy was applied to word-guessing teaching in reading comprehension of computer material. The research question is studied in this experiment: Can the training of using ways of word-guessing base on the knowledge of metonymy and metaphor promote students' ability of word guessing in reading comprehension of computer material? The results show that students have gradually paid attention to the word-guessing skill in reading process. The skills based on the knowledge of metaphor and metonymy have helped students get the right meaning of the unknown words in computer reading materials. It has really enlarged students' vocabulary and improved their confidence in finishing reading. 展开更多

Winds of Change in Saudi English Textbooks: A Cultural Perspective

To this end, the three textbooks which were published one after... The paper investigates Saudi English textbooks in order to trace the ways in which culture was dealt with in the English curriculum in the last 33 years. To this end, the three textbooks which were published one after another for the third-grade secondary school students in the last three decades were analyzed. The paper finds that in the first book published in 1982, the writer introduced only those cultural elements from outside Saudi Arabia, which could be subordinated to the self-enclosed cohesive Saudi national culture that rested and was shaped on and around the faith of Islam. The same cultural pattern is maintained in the second book published in 1998, but in the third book published in 2013, a huge number of western and multicultural elements were accommodated without any attempt to assimilate them to Saudi national culture. The paper concludes that in these textbooks, culture was taken either as Parsons's "system"--pattern-maintaining national culture-or as Rothkopf's and Friedman's "pattern-breaking" western culture, but it was seldom treated as Bauman's "matrix". 展开更多
