《资治通鉴》自问世以来,后世多有或仿或续、或承或革、或拷或注之著,由此产生了贯穿自宋代以来的“通鉴”著作群及“通鉴”之学。早在16世纪,相关“通鉴”之著就作为西方人编撰有关中国历史著述的引证文献,为欧洲人了解中国历史提供参照。而肇始于20世纪三四十年代,由我国编译馆发起的《资治通鉴》英译活动,更是代表了我国对外译介中国文化的战略先声。历时爬梳“通鉴”著作群西传始末,聚焦《资治通鉴》英译活动,探讨译介前后的历史语境及历史回响,以期为后续“通鉴”的汉学和翻译研究提供参考,并对当下中国文化“走出去”中历史典籍外译的开展有所启发。

学者译史与史家译史:译者身份对翻译过程影响举隅——以《资治通鉴》方志彤、张磊夫译本为例

《资治通鉴》英译活动肇始于20世纪30、40年代,迄今为止,相关英译节译本已近10种。其中,以美国华裔学者方志彤和澳大利亚史学家张磊夫译本的学术影响力及接受度最甚。方志彤以原始资料研究“Quellenforschung”为目的,附注详考原作文献来源;张磊夫以启牖读者为目的,傍释详解原作历史事件之本因。鉴于两位译者在身份上具有显著特质,进而诉诸译者身份视阈,探讨译者个人身份对翻译过程的影响,为微观文字层面的翻译现象,寻求中观译者因素层面的释疑。
