It is necessary to understand their degree of identification with both Chinese and English cultures. Based on the social psychological model and the theory of productive bilingualism phenomenon, this paper adopts quantitative and qualitative methods, i.e., a combination of questionnaires and interviews, to carry out an empirical study of the current situation of cultural identity. 161 English majors were participated in this study to find out the changes in their cultural identity and the degree of their identification with the two cultures of Chinese and English after they studied English majors. The results of the study show that nearly half of the English majors experienced “additive change” and “productive change” after studying English major, while a small number of them experienced “subtractive change” and “divisive change”. The degree of students’ cultural identity in Chinese is significantly higher than that in English. This study provides insights for the development of intercultural communication skills of English majors, which can help students better balance the psychological status of the two cultures, Chinese and English, and actively spread the outstanding overseas culture while promoting Chinese cultural confidence.展开更多
