Register theory has important significance for English writing. Based on the register theory and taking some students' composition as typical examples, this thesis makes an analysis of common problems existing in English writing, and then points out the causes that lie behind those problems. In this paper, errors per se were collected from 107 writing samples of Chinese college students, and then investigated from a variety of linguistic perspectives. Traditional theoretical approaches, i.e. CA and EA, are incorporated in the source analysis for a more comprehensive interpretation. Hopefully, the findings of the study will shed lights on lexical instruction and acquisition in the field of SLA.展开更多

Peer review, as one of the teaching methods to evaluate students' writings, has been widely discussed. Through a case study the author of this article tries to probe into the feasibility and advantages of peer review practice in the classroom and the new demands brought by the changes of roles for teacher and students. In teaching English composition the practice of peer review proves to be an effective approach, but its success lies in the skillful model designing and effective teaching process control. The results indicate that: First, both the teachers and students attached much importance to language, but the teachers put significantly more emphasis on organization and content whereas the students put significantly more emphasis on vocabulary;Second, the beliefs of students were heavily influenced by their conceptions of the purposes of EFL writing tasks and the assessment criteria adopted to mark their writing;Third, the disparity between teachers' and students' beliefs caused them to emphasize different aspects of an essay when giving feedback;Finally, students' beliefs had a negative impact on the development of effective writing strategies.
