The results showed that the calcium concentration in leaves and shoots increased with fruit development. The cultivars displayed only a small difference in the calcium concentration during the early stage of development, the difference became very significant at the late stage of development, especially in shoots. In shoots, for example, calcium content was highest in Starkrimson (19 638.6 mg kg-1) and lowest in Fuji (8 751.3 mg kg-1). Calcium concentration was highest in young fruits and was found to decrease with the growth of fruit, and was characterized by a dramatic drop at the rapid expansion stage. There was a significant difference among cultivars. Young Starkrimson fruits contained the highest calcium concentration of 506.52 mg kg-1 among cultivars tested, followed by Pink Lady and Fuji. The calcium concentration in mature fruits from high to low is as follows: Starkrimson, Sansa, Pink Lady, Senshu, Gala, Fuji, Red General and New Century. In this study, it was found that eight cultivars continuously assimilated calcium during the whole growing season, especially at the young stage when fruit took up 35-46% of total calcium. The calcium content in fruitlets was low in all cultivars; in the expansion stage, there was rapid absorption of about 30% of total calcium, whereas in the ripening fruit, content of calcium was reduced. The calcium accumulation increased with fruit growth in stalk, similar to that in fruit.展开更多

Control maidens were fertilized with mineral fertilizers containing mainly NPK. The maiden trees fertilized with the preparations Tytanit and Humus UP grew less vigorously and produced smaller increases in the length of lateral shoots than those fertilized with mineral fertilizers. On the other hand, bio preparations such as BF Amin, BF Quality, Micosat and Vinassa promoted tree branching and intensified the growth of lateral shoots, stimulating tree growth to a greater extent than the mineral fertilizers.展开更多

The experiment was designed to evaluate NAA, over a range of concentrations (15, 20 and 30 ppm) when applied alone, and BA + NAA combinations (BA--60, 100, 120 or 140 ppm + NAA 5 ppm) for thinning the assessed apple cultivars. All the applied treatments with NAA and BA + NAA adequately thinned "Senabija" and "Ko2ara", whereas application of NAA 20 ppm and 30 ppm and combined treatment BA 140 ppm + NAA 5 ppm were effective fruit thinners for "Pasinka". In terms of the average fruit weight and number of fruits categorized as large (〉 75 mm or 〉 65 ram), as well as from the aspect of fruit number per trunk cross-sectional area, the variant of treatment BA 140 ppm + NAA 5 ppm was most effective on "Senabija" and "Paginka", whereas BA 100 ppm + NAA 5 ppm had the best effect on "Kozara".展开更多

Such interventions are imposed by the development cycle of this pathogen, which during its entire vegetation produces its vegetative reproduction organs-conidia which in turn cause continuous infections. For this purpose, a whole range of fungicides is applied every year, which in order to provide more successful protection is supplemented by new chemical components. One of the most common fungicides which have been largely applied recently in protection of apple cultivars from this disease caused by the pathogen Podosphaera leucotricha is a fungicide produced under the trademark ZATO WG 50, mainly composed of trifloxystrobin. This fungicide also provided the best results in combating this disease during our three-year-long experiment, when compared to other types of fungicides. Taking into account the biology of this pathogen, this fungicide should be introduced until the end of vegetation, which may raise suspicion of its degradation into the apple fruits. In our study, apart from measuring the intensity scale of infection with this disease, we also conducted analyses of the time needed for trifloxystrobin to degrade into the apple fruits, by accurately determining the time of its decomposition by its application into two different concentrations.展开更多

Food colloids open a lot of different possibilities in dessert production, which are used to perform certain functions. Pectin is a traditional agent for jams and jellies, but its application extends to fruit products for the food industry. In food product technology pectin is added as gelling agent and stabilizer. The three apple varieties "Antonovka", "Baltais Dzidrais" and "Zarja Alatau" harvested in Latvia State Institute of Fruit Growing were used for the experiment. Photometric measurement was used to determine the composition of pectin. Pectin was isolated from the apple mass by leaching with ethanol, and from the residues by extracting with diluted sodium hydroxide solution. By adding carbasol and sulphuric acid to the extract, through different intermediate stages carroty condensation product formed, which was photometrically measured at 525 nm. Pectin, pH and soluble dry matter were determined in fresh and frozen apple mass from apples of three ripeness stages. On the basis of worked out functional analysis of colloids, it is possible to optimize regulation of heat processes for different ripeness stages of apples. It is established that ripeness stage influences pectin quantity in fruits, but there are no data about pectin quantity changes in frozen fruits. By fruit ripening under the impact of enzyme protopectinase, protopectin hydrolyzes and transforms into pectin, which flows from the intercellular spaces into protoplasm of cells. Therefore ripe as well as heat treated fruits are soft and loose. It is important to measure pectin in frozen apple mass, in order to determine its potential jellying power. For each kind of product appropriate conditions have to be chosen for freezing, as well as the condition of products before freezing has to be taken into consideration in order to reduce the harmful influence on their quality to the minimum. The results of the research indicate that pectin quantity in frozen apple mass has decreased substantially. This susceptibility of sugar containing products to temperature fluctuations possibly is due to their high concentration of unfrozen water and lower melting temperature. It is possible to calculate the mass fraction of ice depending on temperature and moisture content in product which is very important for prognosticating the product quality. The aim of the research is to compare changes of pectin quantity in fresh and frozen apple products depending on storage time. The research is related to application possibilities of the current colloids, which are used in food industry at present.展开更多

Compared with independent farming, agricultural cooperatives reduce transaction costs by 48 yuan/mu and increase farmers' net income by 321 yuan/mu. Other factors found to influence transaction costs and farmers'net income were farmer's gender, educational attainment, farm size, the availability of market information, distance to market, and level of government support. Independent farmers" most common explanations for not participating in agricultural cooperatives were that doing so would not reduce transaction costs significantly and that the cooperatives would impede the autonomy of their decision-making.展开更多

Then 15 and 11 landmarks were determined from fore and hind wings, respectively. With transforming of landmark's two dimensional coordinate data into partial warp scores, 26 and 18 scores were generated for fore and hind wings, respectively. Cluster analysis based on wing shape variables using Ward's algorithm assigned nine geographical populations into two groups. The pattern of grouping based on fore and hind wings was different in both sexes. Principal component analysis revealed discrimination between geographic populations and confirmed the result of cluster analysis. Among environmental parameters, wind speed showed the highest correlation with wing shape variables. Non significant correlation was observed between geographic and morphological distance matrices as revealed by Mantel test.展开更多

Resistance to the Mexican strain of CpGV was detected in orchards in Germany, France and Italy. A laboratory insect colony was started from insects collected in a French resistant orchard. It was named RGV. Various virus isolates were identified as active against this resistant insect colony. Field tests were carried out in 2007 to test if the two virus isolates CpGV-I12 and NPP-R1 were effective in the field. Although these virus isolates were not able to reduce insect caused fruit damages, they significantly reduced the overwintering insect populations. NPP-R1 was subjected to eight passages on RGV larvae (NPP-R1.8) that improved its biological activity on RGV larvae. 2008 field trials were set up to test this improved virus strain, compared to CpGV-I12 and Madex plus active on RGV. These tests confirmed the ability to control both in susceptible and resistant insect populations.展开更多
