Patients were referred to the LMttS (Licking Memorial Health Systems) Outpatient Medication Therapy Insulin Clinic by their physician during the time periods of July 2012 through March 2013 and August 2014 through December 2014. Physician authorization permitted pharmacists to provide clinical monitoring in order to evaluate and adjust insulin, GLP-I agonist and amylin mimetic doses by adhering to approved dosing guidelines and policy and procedures. Hemoglobin Atc values were obtained from the patients electronic medical records. Patients achieved an average decrease in HbAlc of 0.8 percentage points over a mean of 83 days. Pharmacist insulin management is an innovative pharmacy service through which clinical pharmacists can have an impact on patients' HbAtc.展开更多

Therapeutic protocols are an important tool for encouraging the correct use of drugs. The aims of this work are: to analyse the type of patients who visit the pharmacies in the study; to determine the importance of pharmaceutical advice in dispensing; and to identify the most commonly used strains of probiotics and laxatives. A transversal descriptive and observational study was conducted with 500 patients in five pharmacies. The population taking part in the study is predominantly female, aged over 61, of Spanish nationality, actively employed and with middle or higher educational studies. Over 90% of the patients followed the advice of the pharmacist over the advice of their doctors. The most widely used probiotics were Lactobacillus acidophillus and Saccharomyces boulardii for gastrointestinal protection and treatment of diarrhoea. The most commonly used laxatives are bulk-forming and contact laxatives. The pharmacist’s opinion is increasingly important in the treatment of pathologies that may be considered as minor. Therapeutic protocols are an aid to correct dispensing.展开更多

The results will be used to further develop the pharmaceutical care delivered by pharmacists for asthmatic children, and to promote children's asthma control in China. The study was conducted in outpatient department of Beijing Children's Hospital from Mar. to Sept., 2009. Asthmatic children (101) were randomly divided into two groups: the intervention group that received routine treatment and complete pharmaceutical care provided by pharmacists and the control group that received routine treatment only. Questionnaires were distributed to both groups and responses were analyzed statistically. Our results showed that the percentage of children using medication following doctor's instructions in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group (66.67% and 36.00%, respectively); the percentage of children correctly using inhaler devices in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group (78.26% and 32.84%, respectively); children and care givers of the intervention group had significantly more knowledge about medication compliance. In conclusion, the pharmaceutical care provided by pharmacists could improve medication compliance of asthmatic children, and it would be desirable to further develop the pharmaceutical care for asthmatic children across China.展开更多

The role of pharmacists is changing from being medication dispensers to outcome-oriented and patient-focused care providers. However, it is still unclear how to play the role of pharmacists and carry out the related work in the new situation. Here, literature for relevant evidence was searched and summarized. Analysis results showed that there was a significant gap between pharmacy practice in China and developed countries. Evidence has supported pharmacists in their emerging role as care providers, that is available to improve the efficacy and quality of pharmaceutical care and ensure the safety of medicines for patients, but still more efforts are needed to promote new attitude toward more professional career, such as paying attention to the examination of outpatient prescription and medical orders, deeply clinical practice and individualized treatment, self-enhancement and public awareness of pharmacists. Collectively, the safety of patients can be ensured only by improving profession of pharmacists and showing the value of pharmacists. In doing so, pharmacy can develop rapidly, and pharmaceutical care with rational drug use can be realized.展开更多
