What impresses readers most is the frequent usage of Gothic features, like murders, ghost, witches, and so on. The paper will make a tentative study on Gothic settings, Gothic characters, and Gothic plots in Macbeth. The age of confusing right and wrong and horrible environmental settings will be expounded; then, the detailed analysis of Gothic characters like Macbeth, the trio of Witches and Lady Macbeth will be elaborated on; the plots of noumenal horror and mental terror will be elucidated finally. It is helpful for deeply understanding the drama's theme and interpreting the work from a new perspective, which plays a positive role in the research and development of Gothic literature and possesses certain significance for literary reference.展开更多

Oddly enough, that may be the case, because the sole extant copy of its first edition has no title page, thus no date. Copies of its second edition do have a title page and are clearly dated 1599, plus a 1612 augmented project was marked "third edition". Thus, it should be significant that some of TPP's poetry have been found in manuscript or early publications back to the early 1590s, and in one case perhaps as early as 1585. But TPP may be a relic of a much larger anthology of poetry which possibly existed in manuscript circa 1589-94, was revised circa 1610-12 to accompany an intended publication of all of Shakespeare's works (poetry and drama), but was not fully published until nearly three decades later. It is also notable that the 1640 anthology attributed to Shakespeare contained TPP plus lengthy poetic paraphrases from Ovid in much the same mold as V&A and RofL. Moreover, the 1640 anthology may hold a key to radically earlier dating of the 1623 First Folio (F1). We will briefly delve into the murky world of the Elizabethan publishing world of the 1580s and beyond, wherein the 17th Earl of Oxford's former servant, Anthony Munday, may have had an important role in the disposition of each "Shake-speare" work.展开更多

However, his language style used in his literary works is still worth studying. First of all, this study explores changing sense of emblem and emblem language comparing Shakespeare's era and today. Secondly, it puts stress on the effects of emblem traditions on Shakespeare. Lastly, this article aims to shed light on his emblematical language in his Midsummer Night's Dream, which is one of his most leading works in terms of having highly visible emblematical interpretations.展开更多

Macbeth murdered. Then he balked. He hallucinated himself out of his wits. Then he went on a rampage to save his own skin. He destroyed in fear of being destroyed. Yet all he ended up doing is losing his peace, his composure, his wife, and finally, his life. The whole of Operation Kingship, if the author may so call the whole business of eliminating Duncan out of the way of the royal throne, failed miserably. Macbeth, on the lookout for power found himself terribly, fearfully beaten, crestfallen, devastated. The million-dollar question then is -what is it that went so very wrong in the whole process? Critics are often heard to cry his ambition--his "overvaulting ambition" down as his incorrigible hamartia. But living in the 21st century, one gets to hear that ambition is not bad after all--the higher the "ambi-horse" vaults, the higher the chances of success is. In this dissertation, the author proposes to analyze Macbeth's case from the perspective of management studies. This paper, more than setting forth a literary statement of Macbeth's predicament, aims at what management Gurus would love to call a candid SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) and STEEPLED (social, technological, economic, educational, political, legal, environmental, and demographic factors) analysis of Macbeth's situation to find out where the shoe pinched, whether the whole project crashed because of inefficient leadership, or whether there was no leadership at all, whether organizational strategies were not properly formulated or whether the implementation capsized horribly, thereby making the whole business a rudderless wild goose chase. The discussion necessarily follows up with an insight into what Macbeth lacked as far as Maslow's Pyramid of Needs is concerned and what it could have been like, had it been rewritten with a corporate-friendly, management-savvy 21st century protagonist armed with well formulated action plans and stronger inter-personal skills, in the titular lead.展开更多

Their monstrosity is often a distorted mirror image of the hero's humanity. Shakespeare's Caliban is a famous example of the affinity between monster and protagonist. Homer's Polyphemus, the first monster in Western tradition establishes certain traits that persist through later literature: lawless, barbarian, cannibal, and giant. Polyphemus hates men, but loves his old ram. Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon in Beowulf are giants, lawless, cannibals. The dragon Beowulf dies fighting anticipates the identity between hero and monster that Borges makes explicit in Asterion, the Minotaur. Dante's Satan in the Inferno fails to leave later successors. In Borges's "The House of Asterion" the Minotaur is both monster and hero. Asterion's affinities with other protagonists in Borges' stories suggest that the monster in the labyrinth is not the Minotaur, but the concept of infinity.展开更多

Also this research gives a glimpse of the history of how Cleopatra was viewed from Roman point of view. The goal is to show how the western masculine frame of mind looked at the oriental femininity depicted by Cleopatra also; the research will discuss the way both authors displayed the oriental Queen of Egypt Cleopatra in their literary works. Cleopatra was presented as a mystery to all the male figures who wrote about her. In Caesar and Cleopatra, George Bernard Shaw uses his legendary wit to turn ancient history on its head--and to challenge Shakespeare's view of his two famous protagonists. Political drama meets sparkling comedy as veteran strategist Julius Caesar becomes mentor to the enchanting teenage queen of Roman-occupied Egypt. To conclude, Bernard Show portrayed the character of Caeser and Cleopatra unlike Shakespeare's weak representation of Julius Caeser展开更多
