The effect on circulating levels of antioxidants and indicators of oxidative stress, such as F2-isoprostane, was studied. RESULTS: The antioxidant enteral supplement showed no adverse effects and was well tolerated. After surgery a decrease in the circulating levels of antioxidant parameters was observed. Only selenium and glutamine levels were restored to pre-operative values one week after surgery. F2-isoprostane increased in the first three postoperative days only in the antioxidant supplemented group. Lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) levels decreased faster in the antioxidant group after surgery.CONCLUSION: Despite lower antioxidant levels there was no increase in the circulating markers of oxidative stress on the first day after major abdominal surgery. The rise in F2-isoprostane in patients receiving the antioxidant supplement may be related to the conversion of antioxidants to oxidants which raises questions on antioxidant supplementation. Module AOX restored the postoperative decrease in selenium levels. The rapid decrease in LBP levels in the antioxidant group suggests a possible protective effect on gut wall integrity. Further studies are needed on the role of oxidative stress on outcome and the use of antioxidants in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.展开更多

It has been shown that mitochondrial injury and energy depletion are the earliest intracellular events in the early phase of AP. Moreover, it has been revealed that restoration of intracellular ATP level restores cellular functions and defends the cells from death. We have recently shown in a systematic review and meta-analysis that early enteral feeding is beneficial in adults; however, no reviews are available concerning the effect of early enteral feeding in pediatric AP. In this minireview, our aim was to systematically analyse the literature on the treatmentof acute pediatric pancreatitis. The preferred reporting items for systematic review(PRISMA-P) were followed, and the question was drafted based on participants, intervention, comparison and outcomes: P: patients under the age of twenty-one suffering from acute pancreatitis; I: early enteral nutrition (per os and nasogastric- or nasojejunal tube started within 48 h); C: nil per os therapy; O: length of hospitalization, need for treatment at an intensive care unit, development of severe AP, lung injury (including lung oedema and pleural effusion), white blood cell count and pain score on admission. Altogether, 632 articles (Pub Med: 131; EMBASE: 501) were found. After detailed screening of eligible papers, five of them met inclusion criteria. Only retrospective clinical trials were available. Due to insufficient information from the authors, it was only possible to address length of hospitalization as an outcome of the study. Our mini-meta-analysis showed that early enteral nutrition significantly(SD = 0.806, P = 0.034) decreases length of hospitalization compared with nil per os diet in acute pediatric pancreatitis. In this minireview, we clearly show that early enteral nutrition, started within 24-48 h, is beneficial in acute pediatric pancreatitis. Prospective studies and better presentation of research are crucially needed to achieve a higher level of evidence.展开更多

The results showed that Tvetenia discoloripes was by far the most abundant chironomid, dominating the overall standing stock of the taxa. In terms of life cycle, Chaetocladius sp., Eukiefferiella potthasti and T. discoloripes developed 1 generation a year, whereas Microtendipes sp. and Pagastia sp. developed two, while Pentaneura sp. and Polypedilum sp. developed three. T. discoloripes was the most productive chironomid with 120.305 8 g/m2.a, Pentaneura sp. and E. potthasti had relatively high production values of >17 g/m2.a, and the rest were <10 g/m2.a. All the production temporal variation tended to follow biomass patterns. T. discoloripes, Chaetocladius sp. and Pagastia sp. concentrated most of their production in winter, whereas E. potthasti, Pentaneura sp. and Polypedilum sp. had relatively higher production throughout the year. Only Microtendipes sp. had a production that peaked in summer. The overlap in temporal distribution of production among the chironomid species was generally high (>0.5), especially for filter-collectors Microtendipes sp., Chaetocladius sp., Chaetocladius sp., T. discoloripes and Pagastia sp. All species except Pentaneura sp. consumed a large portion of amorphous detritus, constituting more than 90% of their diets, and contributing nearly 90% to their secondary production. All the 7 chironomids represent obvious adaptation to local highly variable climate in summer and autumn in life cycle pattern, production dynamics, and food type.展开更多

To study molecular identity and behavior of mobile substances transmitted between organs via vascular tissue, it is necessary to collect exudate from stem or other organs. Modifed stem-cutting method for exudate collection in soybean was used in this study by selecting the optimum sampling time and position, using reagents preventing RNA degradation, etc. Diurnal dynamics analysis of exudate emission was found to be the highest during 10:00-10:10 am. Totally 15 μL pure exudate was collected from the stem cut between cotyledonary and unifoliolate nodes at V1 stage (unifoliolate just expanded) of young soybean seedling. Improved TRIzol method was used to extract RNA and protein from stem exudate. A phloem specifc gene of Glycine max sieve element occlusion s, SEO, in exudate samples was successfully amplifed by RT-PCR, which comfrmed the success of RNA extraction. SDS-PAGE showed the majority of proteins in exudate were of low molec-ular weight. Method proposed in this study would facilitate collection of quality exudate and enhance further investigation of mobile substances in soybean.展开更多

Operating wireless networks more efficiently by exploiting social relationships between MSN users is an appealing but challenging option for network operators. An MSN-aided content dissemination technique is presented as a potential extension of conventional cellular wireless networks in order to satisfy growing data traffic. By allowing the MSN users to create a self-organized ad hoc network for spontaneously disseminating contents, the network operator may be able to reduce the operational costs and simultaneously achieve an improved network performance. In this paper, we first summarize the basic features of the MSN architecture, followed by a survey of the factors which may affect MSN-aided content dissemination. Using a case study, we demonstrate that one can save resources of the Base Station (BS) while substantially lowering content dissemination delay. Each legume was cultivated in four plots of different soil fertility as block (5 ~ 5 m2 per plot). Phosphorus (P) fertilizer was applied once just before planting at level of 50 kg ha~. Watering was done three times per week using sprinkler. The legumes were harvested at 120 days after planting (dap) in three sub-plots of 1 x 1 m2 size for their yield measurement. Samples of each legume was taken for Dry Matter (DM), Organic Matter (OM), Crude Protein (CP), cellulose, hemi-cellulose and lignin content and in vitro DM, OM and CP digestibility test. Data were statistically analyzed using Genstat release 12.2. The results showed that the legumes showed significantly different (P 〈 0.01) in biomass yield. The highest biomass yield was shown by SS (6,739 kg DM ha-l; 6,120 kg OM ha1 and 1,224 kg CP hal) and the lowest was by DL (1,294 kg DM ha^-1; 1,157 kg OM ha^-1 and 242 kg CP ha^-1). In general, there was no significant difference (P 〉 0.05) of DM digestibility of the eight legumes, except for DL which showed significantly highest (P 〈 0.01) DM and OM digestibility compared to the other.展开更多

Florentine Renaissance depictions of the theme are numerous and varied, traditionally represented as a predella (step) panel and as an altarpiece in dining halls or sacristies of churches and convents. Vasari's Last Supper for the Refectory ofLe Murate (The Walled) in Florence is an unusual depiction of Christ's thanksgiving. This imposing religious structure was painted for a poor Benedictine nunnery's cenacolo (refectory) in Florence. Vasari completed two drawings for the commission in 1546. The drawings and painting reveal how Vasari drew upon the work of his predecessors to create an innovative expression of thanksgiving, betrayal, and departure. This large masterpiece was severely damaged, almost irreparably, by several mishaps and floods in 1583 and 1718 and, more recently, by the major Florentine alluvione (flood) of 1966. In commemoration of the 50th year anniversary of this last catastrophic event, Vasari's Le Mutate Last Supper was carefully and magically restored by a group of masterful technicians, artists, and scientists. Their collaboration and support from the private sector demonstrate the successful bond among art, technology, science, and patronage.展开更多

For the latter, the basic difference between the two types of products is that a plant protectant has a targeted activity on plant pathogens, while a bio-fertilizer acts indirectly by nourishing and fortifying the host plant (healthier plant), thus inducing a generalized resistance to the onset of pathological status, irrespective of its origin and nature. Case-studies are presented on the effectiveness of MC as bio-fertilizers/bio-effectors on different crops. Bio-fertilizers exhibit a double effect--biotic and abiotic, leading to the fortification of the crop plant linked to its more effective water and nutrient uptakes as well asto a generalized healthier status. This in turn leads to a higher resistance to diseases. In addition, bio-fertilizers play a relevant role on the reduction of environmental impacts due to chemical fertilizers, e.g., by facilitating the uptake of phosphorus (P), thus reducing the need of P fertilization. Although finding a scientifically-based balance between regulatory need and marketing constraint is not always an easy task, the availability of scientific advancements combined to common sense should help in describing positive effects and risk profiles of MC in agriculture.展开更多
