The sources of organic substrates mainly concentrate in organic waste of agriculture and forestry, animal husbandry industrial wastes and municipal sludge and so on in China. In order to better explore and utilize organic substrates resources, the authors summed up the application of organic substrates of different sources to vegetable seedling raising. The re- sults showed that the organic substrate produced by traditional and advanced tech- nology had the characteristics of stability, strong buffer capacity, comprehensive nu- trition and a good environment for root growth, which could reduce the production cost, cultivate high quality seedling and benefit cyclic utilization of resources, and replace or partly replace the turf. The prospects for future research direction were discussed to provide references for research and development on organic vegetable seedling raising technology in China.展开更多

Crude extracts were obtained through cold or hot extraction methods on dried powdered seeds, seed teguments, leaves or empty pods. They were thereafter purified using techniques based on physicochemical properties of active substances. Assays were carried out on seedling growth of Monocotyledons and Dicotyledons representatives. Results showed that all extracts exerted significant dose dependent inhibition on epicotyl and hypocotyl growth. However, some extracts exhibited a slight stimulation effect at low doses. Moreover, A. arenicola crude extract (E23) slightly inhibited axillary bud growth, while A. tulearensis crude extract (ET1) showed a stimulation effect. According to preliminary phytochemical screening results, these effects might be due to saponins or alkaloids.展开更多

Male sterile transgenic plants can be obtained through genetic transformation with related genes destroying or interfering with pollen or anther development. Male sterile cauliflower, tomato, cabbage, etc. have been developed in this way, and some begin to be used to produce hybrid seed. Appling some techniques can also maintain and restore the male sterility. These related researches will effectively promote the heterosis utilization and the development of crop breeding. This paper mainly presents their principles and applications in vegetable crops.展开更多

Ethnobotanical data on the knowledge of useful Indigenous Food Plants among the dwelling population in the villages around Kaya Kauma and Kaya Tsolokero were obtained from the using semi-structured questionnaire and interviews of the population in the homesteads around both the forests. The Food Plants included vegetables, fruit or any sort of food if they yield to the society. Results based on a questionnaire survey in 18 villages around Kaya Kauma and 9 villages around Kaya Tsolokero are presented by different stratum of Gender, Age, Tribes, Education level, Relationship to the village, Marital status. Usage of plant as food out of the population interviewed around Kaya Kauma and the total fruit plants mentioned by the villagers dwelling around the forest was 18 belonging to 9 different families. The total vegetable plants which were mentioned by the population around Kaya Kauma were 23 belonging to 12 different families. Other Food Plants mentioned by the community was 36. Out of the population interviewed around Kaya Tsolokero out of the Food Plants mentioned by the community, total fruit plants mentioned by the community was 46 belonging to 19 different families, total vegetable plants mentioned was 20 which belonged to 13 different families and other Food Plants mentioned by the community was 23. Out of the dwelling tribes around Kaya Kanma, Mkauma emerged as the most popular tribe and Mjibana as the most popular tribe around Kaya Tsolokero. The 18 adjoining villages to Kaya Kauma were interviewed for the survey and 9 adjoining villages were interviewed adjacent to Kaya Tsolokero.展开更多
