The effect of inhaled nano-TiO2 on lung histology and serum biochemical indexes is evaluated in healthy and adult Kunming mice(eight in each group)after exposure to TiO2 aerosols(1 500 mg/m3)in a sealed chamber.Another eight mice are exposed to indoor air to be served as a control group.Lung tissue and blood are collected after euthanizing the animals.The results show that lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)activity increases in all experimental groups.Alanine aminotransferase(ALT)activity and blood urea nitrogen(BUN)levels are increased in the group exposed to TiO2 aerosols for 28 d,and creatinine(Cr)levels are increased in 14 d and 28 d samples(P0.05).No obvious changes are observed in other serum indexes.Lungs of mice exposed to 28 d exposure show significant but moderate increase in pulmonary inflammation,and many TiO2 particles are found in the interstitium of pulmonary alveoli. 展开更多

Roles of Biomolecules in the Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles: Case of Gardenia jasminoides Extract

Rapid development of biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles using plants has attracted extensive interests to further investigate this novel and eco-friendly method. In the biosynthesis process, the plant may act as reducing agent, capping agent or shape directing agent. However, identifying specific roles of various components in the plant is challenging. In this study, we use biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with Gardenia jasminoides Ellis extract to address this issue. The formation process of silver nanoparticles is investigated and the nanoparticles are characterized with the ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the Gardenia jasminoides Ellis extract can reduce silver ions to form silver nanoparticles, stabilize the nanoparticles, and affect the growth of silver nanocrystal to form silver nanowires. Only geniposide in the extract exhibits good shape-directing ability for silver nanowires. It is found that bovine albumin is a potential capping agent, whereas rutin, gallic acid and chlorogenic acid possess reducing and capping ability. 展开更多

A new process to produce magnetite partially coated with strawberry-like gold nanoparticles in aqueous media is reported. The fast response to magnetic fields and optical properties of gold nanoparticle-based colloidal systems are the two main advantages of this new Fe@Au nanomaterial. These advantages allow for the use of this new colloidal nanomaterial for various purposes in proteomics and biomedicine, as proteins can bind to the surface, and the surface can also be funcfionalized. As proof-of-concept, the new Fe@Au nanoparticles have been assessed in biomarker discovery as a tool for pre-concentration and separation of proteins from complex proteomes. To this end, sera from healthy people were compared with sera from patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The application of this new Fe@Au nanomaterial combined with mass spectrometry has allowed for the identification of 53 proteins, and it has also shown that the heat shock protein HSP75 and the plasma protease C1 inhibitor are potential biomarkers for diagnostics and control of multilvle mveloma vro^ression. 展开更多
