A successful imperial examination candidate, he traveled in all places in the capacity of imperial official. He followed Zeng Fan and Li Hongzhang, taking up the posts as governor of Changzhou and Songjiang. He was a noted economist, poet and calligrapher of late Qing Dynasty.
