And the crux of the matter is to obtain a precise wake curvature parameter KR. A Peters-He finite-state wake model is improved to incorporate the operating-state-dependent KR to embody maneuver-induced effects. The curvature parameter KR varies with rotor forward speed, thrust and maneuvering angular rate according to a smoking experiment. Moreover, aerodynamic force/moment experiment indicates that after a quasi-step angular input, both on-axis and off-axis rotor responses show that an overshoot and its amplitude increases with the pitching rate. The comparison between theoretical and experimental results shows that the operating-state-accurate curvature parameter must be adopted to obtain accurate aerodynamic forces/moments, especially for the off-axis response. Additionally, combined with a dynamic wake distortion model, the obtained correlation agrees well with experimental data.展开更多

A finite element model (FEM) of a rolling tire under steady state is established based on theoretical hydrodynamics and mechanics principles, in which factors, including tire type, water film thickness, pavement surface properties, and vehicle speed, are considered. With the FEM, braking distances under different operating conditions are calculated. Furthermore, the allowable water film thickness is determined by comparing braking distances calculated with friction management criteria and that required by road geometric design. The results show that the braking distance is affected by the above operating conditions. As a result, it is necessary to maintain consistency between geometric design braking distance requirements and pavement friction management to achieve safe road operations.展开更多

The start-up and performance of the reactor was investigated in the Process. of .artificial glucose wastewater treatment. With the wastewater recycle ratio of 2.5 : 1, the recycled wastewater with biogas could mix sludge and wastewater in the JBILAFB reactor completely. The start-up of the JBILAFB reactor could be completed in less than 70 d through maintenance of hydraulic retention time (HR^I") and stepwise increase of feed total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. After the start-up, with the volumetric TOC loadings of 14.3 kg·m ^-3·d^-1, the TOC removal ratio, the effluent pH, and the volatile fatty acids (VFA)/alkalinity of the JBILAFB reactor were more than 80%, close to 7.0 and less than 0.4, respectively. Moreover, CH4 was produced at more than 70% of the theoretical value, The reactor exhibited high stability under the condition of high volumetric TOC loading. Sludge granules in the JBILAFB reactor were developed during the start-up and their sizes were enlarged with the stepwise increase of volumetric TOC loadings from 0.8 kg.m^-3.d ^-1 to 14.3 kg.m^-3.d^-1. Granules, an offwhite color and a similar spherical shape, were mainly comprised of global-like bacteria. These had good methanogenic activity and settleability, which were formed probably through adhesion of the bacteria. Some inorganic metal compounds such as Fe, Ca, Mg, Al, etc. were advantageous to the formation of the granules.展开更多

The results show the roll is static unstable in small angles; the roll dynamic test curves present obvious non-linearity characteristics, and the model vibrates violently even When the angle of attack is small, which may be provoked by the non-symmetry transition from the small transverse flow around the nose of model. Subsequent research adopts longitudinal trips to generate symmetry transition at the fore-body of the model. As a result, the lateral stability of the aircrafts is apparently improved. The results show that the lateral stability of hypersonic aircrafts is very weak, and the main reason for this is lateral perturbation of flow over the nose, among which asymmetric transition weighs the most. Adoption of longitudinal trips could spur fixed transition of lateral flow, reduce the transition asymmetry of lateral flow, and strengthen the lateral stability of hypersonic aircrafts at the same time.展开更多

The concept of walkability corresponds to the simple act of walking in a pleasant way along the footpaths. Therefore, the IAAPE method was used, which considers aspects of connectivity, comfort, conviviality, coexistence, convenience, clarity and commitment in relation to the space evaluated. In this study, 40 adults, elderly, pregnant and wheelchair subjects were interviewed for evaluating the importance criteria on public sidewalks for a given type of user. In general, reduced sidewalk dimensions and obstacle presence are the main displacement hurdles in most of the cases analyzed. Conductor oscillation is mostly caused by the dynamic forces of nature such as wind loading. This imposes a periodic force on the conductors which is highly undesirable. It is therefore important for engineers to account for the possible effect of the wind loading when designing the power line. Investigations have shown that modeling the exact dynamic behaviour of a conductor is very difficult. Based on this fact, getting the exact analytical solution to conductor vibration is difficult, which is almost impossible, hence the numerical approximation becomes an option. This paper presents the developed finite element method used to analyse the dynamic behaviour of transmission line conductors. The developed FEM (finite element method) is implemented on MATLAB. The numerical analysis using MATLAB that is presented in this paper is used to simulate the response of the conductor when subjected to external loading in the time domain. The simulation is used to analyse the transverse vibration of the conductor. The formulation of the stiffness matrix and load vector is done and the results obtained are used to evaluate the conductor's internal energy dissipation. This finite element solution is compared with the results documented in literature. This numerical simulation is also used to investigate the effects of varying the axial tension on energy dissipation within the strands. Hence, this evolved in physically appropriate energy characterization process that can be used to evaluate the conductor self-damping with respect to line contact.展开更多

The flow characteristics of FTIJs were investigated using particle image velocimetry(PIV). The instantaneous and mean velocities data at different Reynolds numbers(Re) were analyzed to provide insights into the velocity distributions in FTIJs. The effect of jet spacing on the stagnation points, instantaneous velocity, mean velocity, profiles of the x- and ycomponents of mean velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) distributions of FTIJs were investigated at Re = 4100 with a volumetric flow rate ratio of 0.5. The characteristics of the turbulent flows are similar for all jet spacings tested. Two stagnation points are observed, which are independent of jet spacing and are not located in the center of the flow field. However, velocity and TKE distributions are strongly dependent on the jet spacing.Decreasing jet spacing increases the expansion angle and the values of TKE, leading to strong turbulence, improving momentum transfer and mixing efficiency in FTIJs. The present study shows that optimization of the operating parameters is helpful for designing FTIJs.展开更多

As a parameter is smoothly increased, a fascinating variety of dynamic behaviors are produced. For some families the behaviors are monotonic in the parameter, while in others they are not [3]. The question is what sort of conditions on a one parameter family will ensure this monotonicity of the behavior with the parameter? The answer is unknown and will not be given here. What we do instead is to investigate certain geometric-dynamic-combinatorial consequences of assuming that the family has this monotonicity. Specifically, using tools of symbolic dynamics, state space is "course grained" with a finite alphabet. We decompose a non-invertible map into nonlinear but invertible pieces. From these invertible pieces, we form inverse maps via composition along words. Equations of motion are developed for both forward and inverse orbits (in both the variables of state space and the parameter), and an equation relating forward and inverse motions at fix-points is exhibited. Finally, we deduce a list of conditions, each of which is equivalent to monotone behavior. One of these conditions states that simple parity characteristics of words correspond to definite dynamics near fixed-points and vice versa.展开更多

However, despite these undeniable advantages, they are characterized by some critical running conditions, due to the loss of synchronization between the stator's magnetic field and the rotor. In order to theoretically investigate such a behavior, several complex mathematical models have been developed, which require several parameters to be defined. For most step motors, such parameters cannot be easily drawn from their data-sheets; on the contrary, in this paper the authors refer to a simplified electro-mechanical model where the most of the parameters are known from data-sheets. The dependence between electrical and mechanical quantities can be investigated by an experimental point of view. At this aim, a specific novel test rig has been designed and developed for either static or dynamic characteristics measurement of small size step motors. The paper ends with the report of the results of several experimental tests, carried-out on a small-size motor in different running conditions, and with some preliminary remarks on the basis of the measures analysis.展开更多
