The desorption activation energies of the water vapor on virgin and modified silica gels were estimated by using the Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) technique. The interactions between the water and the virgin and modified silica gels were discussed. Results showed that the thermodynamic parameters and desorption activation energy of water vapour on the silica gels increase with decreasing pore size and increasing the surface hydrophilic properties. The desorption activation energy of virgin and modified silica gels was found to increase with increasing the thermodynamic parameters. The larger the adsorption parameters and the desorption activation energy were, the interactions between water and virgin and modified silica gels were.展开更多

Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET) and Barrett–Joyner–Halenda(BJH) model are commonly used analytic methods for adsorption/desorption isotherm. A Chinese anthracite coal is tested in this study using an improved experimental method and adsorption isotherm analyzed by three adsorption mechanisms at different relative pressure stages. The result shows that the micropore filling adsorption predominates at the relative pressure stage from 6.8E 7 to 9E 3. Theoretically, BET and BJH model are not appropriate for analyzing coal samples which contain micropores. Two new analytic procedures for coal surface area and pore size distribution calculation are developed in this work. The results show that BET model underestimates surface area, and micropores smaller than 1.751 nm account for 35.5% of the total pore volume and 74.2% of the total surface area. The investigation of surface area and pore size distribution by incorporating the influence of micropore is significant for understanding adsorption mechanism of methane and carbon dioxide in coal.展开更多

The result showed that the additional effect of wave breaking on backscattering cross-section is not more than 20% except for the small incident angle of VV polarized electromagnetic (e.m.) wave but is significant for HH polarized e.m. wave. Breaking waves lead to increase in the modulus of tilt modulation MTF and the larger the wind speed, the faster the increase. For large incident angle, the modulus of tilt modulation MTF with wave breaking decreases quickly with incident angle for HH polarization and approach to that without wave breaking for VV polarization. The hydrodynamic MTF increases 30%-60% when considering wave breaking and the increase is larger for HH polarization than for VV polarization.展开更多

The resultant samples were characterized by using different methods such as the X-ray diffractometry, the transmission electron microscopy, the nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis and the solid MAS NMR. The results showed that the prepared mesoporous γ-alumina had high surface area and uniform pore size distribution, and its specific surface area and the pore size could be tuned by changing the pH value of the starting solution.展开更多

Total pore volume, pore size distribution and specific surface area were calculated for samples of composite after several successive stages of treatment. The radius of pores presented in the material changes from 1 nm to 90 tam. Total pore volume and specific surface area both decrease after successive stages of pitch impregnation under the pressure, whereas heat treatment up to 1,750 ℃ and 2,000 ℃ leads to creation of some porous space and pore volume expansion. The bulk porosity of C/C composite comes down from 33.7% to 13.7% after the serial stages of treatment and the specific surface area is reduced by half compared to the initial material.展开更多

Most major cities in the world have experienced land subsidence phenomena on some parts of them due to the load of development and modernization. Excessive extraction of groundwater for the needs of industry has led to the condition where the water table drops, and this can possibly trigger subsidence, as observed in Indonesian cities. In this study the authors have shown that the application of DInSAR (differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar) technique using Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-I Synthetic Aperture Radar JERS-I SAR data can reveal subsidence conditions in the studied Makassar city area. Landsat TM (thematic mapper) images were used to evaluate the change of land cover during the observation period of 1994-1999. Makassar is fiat, covered mainly by alluvium deposit that is vulnerable to the load of constructions, and volcanic formations which is porous and will easily be degraded by groundwater extraction. It is found that mostly the subsidence has occurred in the western part of the city, including the industrial district, reclamation area, trading center area and the seaport area. The ground survey has indicated that high human activity exists in every point of subsidence. It is likely that various human activities such as ground water pumping and construction work should have affected the local subsidence phenomena in Makassar, as in the case of other large-scale cities in Indonesia.展开更多
