At lower oxygen coverage, it was found that two reconstructed structures, i.e. c(2×2)-O and (√2×2√2)R45°-O are coexistent. The domain size of the c(2×2)-O structure decreased with the increasing of O2 exposure. The reconstructed structure at very small coverage was also investigated and a “zigzag” structure was observed at this stage. The “zigzag” structure was identified as boundaries of local c(2×2) domains. It was found that the strip region shows much stronger molecule-substrate interaction than that of oxygen covered regions, making it a proper template for patterned organic films. The sequence of the thermal stability was found as zigzag structure〉c(2×2)〉(√2×2√2)R45°-O.展开更多

First, the bond performances between the CFRP grid and the concrete under different types of adhesive and surface treatment were tested. The most efficient anchoring system was adopted for the subsequent scaled tunnel strengthening. Test results show that when the epoxy structural adhesive was used as the bonding material, the failure mode was CFRP grids rupturing, and the anchorage performance was optimal. When the polymer mortar was used as the adhesive, the surface treatments with anchored bolts and grooves can improve the bond performance, and the failure mode was sliding failure with the polymer mortar peeled off. After strengthening with CFRP grids, both the stiffness and the load capacity of the pre-damaged scaled tunnel model were improved. Additionally, the results obtained by fiber bragg grating(FBG) sensors indicate that the strains across tunnel segments were reduced, and the overall performance of the tunnel was improved.展开更多

The top terminal groups of spacer molecules self-assembled on the surface are found critical for locking the nanohybrids into a well-separated state. The STM results indicate that both thiol and carboxylic terminals are effective in this aspect by making strong interaction with the Au portions of the nanohybrids. An argon ion sputtering technique is also proposed to clean up organic contaminants on the surface for improved STM imaging of individual Au-CdSe nanohybrids. These observations help to enrich technical approaches to dispersing individual nanostructures on the surface and provide opportunities to explore their local electroluminescent and energy transfer properties at the nanoscale.展开更多

The growth of BTA on copper is in the form ofpolymeric chain and mainly in one dimension rather than twodimensions. The copper surface covered by BTA becomes flatter, smoother and the roughness was smaller than that of bare copper, sothe corrosion is largely decreased. However, many grooves can be seenbetween BTA polymeric chains in which corrosion may exist to adegree.展开更多

The flow structures were shown in a water tunnel using the hydrogen-bubble flow visualization technique. The measurement results indicate that: (1) the grooves can effectively reduce accumulation of low-speed fluids, decrease the number of the low-speed streaks and depress oscillation of the streaks in the sublayer; (2) the grooves can restrain forming of the horseshoe vortices in the buffer region; (3) the grooves bate oscillation and kinking of the quasi-streamwise vortices and restrain production of the hairpin vortices and the ring vortices, reducing both frequency and intensity of the turbulence bursting; (4) the grooves directly affect the flow structures in the sublayer of the boundary layer and then modulate the flow field up to the buffer region and the logarithmic region by restraining development and interaction of the vortices.展开更多

By using appropriate ammonium sulfide based surface passivation before metallization without any further thermal treatment, we demonstrate characteristics of tunnel p-n junctions, namely Esaki and backward diodes, with figures of merit better than previously published for InAs homojunctions. The further optimization of both the surface doping, in a quantitative way, and the device geometry allows us to demonstrate that these nanowire-based technologically-simple diodes have promising direct current characteristics for integrated high frequency detection or generation.展开更多

Although the surface of MBE films can be protected by capping with inert materials such as amorphous Se, restoring an atomically clean pristine surface after decapping has never been demonstrated, which prevents in-depth investigations of the intrinsic properties of TI thin films with ex situ tools. Using high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we demonstrate a simple and highly reproducible Se decapping method that allows recovery of the pristine surface of extremely high quality Bi2Se3 thin films grown and capped with Se in a separate MBE system then exposed to the atmosphere during transfer into the STM system. The crucial step of our decapping process is the removal of the surface contaminants on top of amorphous Se before thermal desorption of Se at a mild temperature (-210 ~C). This effective Se decapping process opens up the possibility of ex situ characterizations of pristine surfaces of interesting selenide materials and beyond using cutting-edge techniques.展开更多

The results indicate the growth of a well-ordered C60 layer on the WO2/W(110) surface in which the molecules form a close-packed hexagonal structure with a unit cell parameter equal to 0.95 nm. The nucleation of the C60 layer starts at the substrate's inner step edges. Low-temperature STM of C60 molecules performed at 78 K demonstrates well-resolved molecular orbitals within individual molecules. In the C60 monolayer on the WO2/W(110) surface, the molecules are aligned in one direction due to intermolecular interaction, as shown by the ordered molecular orbitals of individual C60. STS data obtained from the C60 monolayer on the WO2/W(110) surface are in good agreement with DFT calculations.展开更多
