Structural assay, gene expression and a series of biochemical analyses were performed to analyze the senescence mechanism in pumpkin strain 185 exposed to SD. Two aspects of important changes initiated in SD exposure contributed to the senescence process. SD functionally led to the initiation of the apical transformation from vegetative to reproductive growth, and then programmed cell death (PCD) in the apical meristem, causing the loss of vigorous growth activity. Moreover, SD treatment resulted in the formation of a great number of dying cells in mesophyll tissue later in the development compared with the phenotype of plants under long_day (LD) conditions. During the senescence process, high expression of nuclease is an important molecular event. These results indicate that the initiation of senescence process in pumpkin stain 185 plants is closely related to the death of cells in apical meristem and mesophyll.展开更多

Cucumber (Cucurnis sativus L.) and zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) plants were grown in closed-soilless culture under unheated-greenhouse conditions at the experimental farm of University of Tuscia, Central Italy to evaluate the effects of four substrates (rockwool, pumice, perlite, and cocofiber) on growth, yield and plant mineral composition. For both cultures, plants grown in cocofiber, perlite and pumice yielded more than those grown in rockwool. The better temperature regime in cocofiber, perlite and pumice was due to the greater thermal inertia compared to rockwool slabs. Thc concentration of N in zucchini and cucumber leaves was significantly higher in cocofiber, perlite and pumice in comparison to the rockwool treatment. The concentration of K was significantly affected by the substrate only for the zucchini squash with the highest value recorded on the organic substrate (cocofiber), whereas the Ca concentration was significantly influenced by the growing media only for cucumber with the highest value observed on pumice. Finally, the lowest Mg concentration in leaf tissue was observed on plants grown with the rockwool substrate for both zucchini squash and cucumber. We can conclude that cocofiber, perlite and pumice are suitable for zucchini and cucumber production in closed soilless system, whereas the use of rockwool is more suitable for crops grown under heated greenhouse conditions.展开更多

To study the effect of simultaneous application of organic and biological fertilizers on yield and yield components of zucchini squash, split plot arrangement of factors based on randomized complete block design with three replications were used during 2009-2010 growing season. The mainplot factors were the type of organic fertilizers, including: (1) cow manure; (2) sheep manure; (3) chicken manure; (4) vermicompost; and (5) control. The subplot factors were the biofertilizes (Nitragin, containing Azotobacter sp., Azospirillum sp. and Pseudomonas sp.) utilization. The results showed the positive but non-significant effect of organic and biological fertilizers on yield and yield components of zucchini squash. Amongst the organic fertilizers, cow and chicken manure, have superiority compared to others. The highest seed oil and protein percent was obtained with application of chicken manure, however there was no significant difference between treatments in seed oil percent. The positive effect of organic and biological fertilizers on seed yield was higher than fruit yield. At a glance, application of cow manure solely was better than its application with nitragin. Nitragin application has no significant effect on some traits when utilized with sheep manure and vermicompost.展开更多

[Method] In the research, a regression equation of celery growth and meteoro- logical factors was established, and meteorological indices of celery in growth period, meteorological disaster indices and highlights of meteorological service for farmers were analyzed in terms of meteorology based on observation of biomass, growth period, and information in national basic stations and automatic stations in regions of Hulu River. [Result] The sowing period and germination period of celery were more significantly influenced by lower temperature of spring in northern area, compared with southern area, hence, celery plants in northern area should be sown later. The suitable germination stage differed about ten days in the four regions from south to north from middle Apdl to middle May. In common climate, the regions in south of Xiao River are not suitable to grow celery under influence of higher temperature at 26 ℃. Hence, celery industry belts should be moved to the north along Hulu River. During growth period of outer leaf, however, celery were less influenced by hail. [Conclusion] The research lays foundation for meteorological service for agriculture.展开更多

In fact, dipterocarp tree species growth well when the ecology is maintained and their growth are dependent on the micro climate and also affected by lithology types. This study was carried out to identify and map tree species dominancy by lithology types at Hulu Sedili Forest Reserve (HSFR) using Geographic Information System (GIS) technique. Different lithology type maps were derived namely Igneous, Sedimentary and Limestone. Through GIS operations tree species data collected from pre-felling inventory and ground survey were overlaid with lithology features. Results showed that at Sedimentary and Igneous types, the presence of dipterocarpaceae family is only 3.09%, and non-dipterocarpaceae family was 96.91%. Syzygium spp. (19.83%) was the most abundance in Igneous and Sedimentary. Meanwhile, Elateriospermum tapos (9.92%) and Lauraceae's family (7.22%) were found to be the most dominant species in Sedimentary types, Macaranga spp. (11.21%) and Elateriospermum tapos (11.02%) in igneous types. However, a Limestone type was discarded from analysis due to unavailable pre-felling data. Thus, this study indicated that there was variation in species dominancy of different lithology types. On the other hand, GIS demonstrated its capability as a useful tool in identifying and maps the location of trees species based on lithology types.展开更多
