We define inter-layer hierarchical random line...To maximize the aggregate throughput achieved in heterogeneous networks, this paper investigates inter-session network coding for the distribution of layered source data. We define inter-layer hierarchical random linear network codes (IHRLNC), which not only take the flexibility of intersession network coding for layer mixing but also consider the strict priority inherent in the layered source data. Furthermore, we propose the inter-layer hierarchical multicast (IHM), which performs IHRLNC in the network such that each sink can recover some source layers according to its individu- al capacity. To determine the optimal type of IHRLNC that should be performed on each edge in IHM, we formulate an optimization problem based on 0-1 integer linear programming, and propose a heuristic approach to approximate the optimal solution in polynomial time. Simulation results show that the proposed IHM can achieve throughput gains over the layered muhicast schemes.展开更多

Firstly, a sc...To improve the efficiency of operating rooms, reduce the hospital' s costs and improve the level of service qualities, a scheduling method is presented based on a filtered-beam-search-based algo- rithm. Firstly, a scheduling problem domain is described. Mathematical programming models are al- so set up with an objective function of minimizing related costs of the system. On the basis of the de= scriptions mentioned above, a solving policy of generating feasible scheduling solutions is estab- lished. Combining with the speeific constraints of operation theatres, a filtered-beam-search-based algorithm is put forward to solve scheduling problems. Finally, simulation experiments are designed. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated and compared with that of other approaches through simulations. Results indicate that the proposed algorithm can reduce costs, and are of prac- ticality and effectiveness.展开更多
This study presents a triangulation approach to the investigation of costing possibilities in Greek higher education institutions. The historical data contained in the financial statements of universities provide the ...This study presents a triangulation approach to the investigation of costing possibilities in Greek higher education institutions. The historical data contained in the financial statements of universities provide the expenditures of the latter. These expenditures are then re-determined with the use of independent variables (Jacobian determinants), as well as with activity-based costing (ABC) and interviews, in order to obtain certainty of accuracy of the calculations and an indication of the cost of educational services, which can help determine magnitudes and improve the long-term planning of university resources. The above process can be used to create cost drivers and cost pools for the new financial burden of academic departments (cost centres) and to calculate the cost per student for each department. This information does not function at variance with or as a substitute for traditional accounting systems but in parallel (or supplementally), providing administrators with more comparative data and a clearer picture of a university's economic operations which will facilitate its decision planning. Thus, it can provide higher education institutions with a decision-making tool for the following tasks: (1) allocation of national and community funds to university departments; (2) financing of textbooks, food, and accommodation; and (3) determining the optimum number of new enrolments.展开更多

The paper shows the use of classic statistical methods in combination with advanced digital measurement systems in order to obtain the correlation dependencies, nature of energy consumption and opportunities for energy forecasting. The main purpose of the study is to obtain statistical dependencies of the nature of power consumption and correlations between electricity consumption and ambient temperature in order to improve the accuracy of energy planning. The analysis includes application of energy management systems for proper energy planning, improving economical efficiency and reducing power and energy losses.展开更多
Design and application of tunable phononic crystals(PnCs)are attracting increasing interest due to their promising capabilities to manipulate acoustic and elastic waves effectively.This paper investigates topology opt...Design and application of tunable phononic crystals(PnCs)are attracting increasing interest due to their promising capabilities to manipulate acoustic and elastic waves effectively.This paper investigates topology optimization of the magnetorheological(MR)materials including PnCs for opening the tunable and wide bandgaps.Therein,the bandgap tunability of the PnCs is achieved by shear modulus variation of MR materials under a continuously changing applied magnetic field.The pseudo elemental densities representing the bi-material distribution inside the PnC unit cell are taken as design variables and interpolated with an artificial MR penalization model.An aggregated bandgap index for enveloping the extreme values ofbandgap width and tunable range of the MR included smart PnCs is proposed as the objective function.In this context,the sensitivity analysis scheme is derived,and the optimization problem is solved with the gradient-based mathematical programming method.The effectiveness of the proposed optimization method is demonstrated by numerical examples,where the optimized solutions present tunable and stably wide bandgap characteristics under different magnetic fields.The tunable optimized PnCs based device that can provide a wider tunable bandgap range is also explored.展开更多
