Alongside the official languages are about 284 minority l...The nation of Cameroon practices Exoglossic Bilingualism whereby, French and English are used as official languages instituted by the constitution of Cameroon. Alongside the official languages are about 284 minority languages with unequal vitality. The official languages together with a lingua franca Pidgin English and a few indigenous languages which have gained regional recognition exert great pressure on some of the indigenous minority languages, endangering them and leaving some almost at the verge of extinction if the situation is not reversed. Endeavours at assessing the language vitality situation reveal that Ngwo and Marjkur （generally known as mankon） spoken in the North West, Nweh in the South West, and Ngomba in the West regions of Cameron face such pressure and are each relatively endangered. Various strategies worthwhile to overcome language endangerment have been considered.展开更多

The aim is to develop a form of technical assistance that supports them in the control of schedules, pre...This paper presents a technological solution to promote and help independent access to work for disabled people. The aim is to develop a form of technical assistance that supports them in the control of schedules, prevention of dangerous areas in the work place, warnings and automatic alarm generation. The device chosen to exchange all this information is a smartphone based on Android Operating System and GPS （Global Positioning System） technology mainly. A set of Android applications has been developed using Java language, and controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries. All of them are connected to the Server Application through the Communications Module. The Server Application Module provides the assistants or psychologists the possibility of supervise all the handicapped people activities. The assistants, psychologists and users have all evaluated the application very positively as it covers disabled people＇s needs perfectly.展开更多
Schema is known to play an important role in reading comprehension. The schema embodying the learners background knowledge of cultural familiar materials facilitates the understanding of the text （Pritchard, 1990）. ...Schema is known to play an important role in reading comprehension. The schema embodying the learners background knowledge of cultural familiar materials facilitates the understanding of the text （Pritchard, 1990）. Also Steffensen, Joag-Dev, and Anderson （1979） and Nelson （1987） proposed that the schemata embodying background knowledge influenced how well the text would be comprehended. However, Hudson （1982） and Carrell （1984） found there was no significant background effect in advanced level learners. From those studies, it seems that background effect is different at different language proficiency levels. Thus, the present study examines the interaction between background knowledge and language proficiency in reading comprehension. The participants were freshmen of National Chiayi University. They were divided into three language proficiency levels based on the General English Proficiency Test. Four reading comprehension tests were constructed to assess their reading comprehension： cultural familiar/unfamiliar text and topic familiar/unfamiliar text. The results of this study showed that participants had better performance on the culture/topic familiar text than the culture/topic unfamiliar text. Thus the findings suggest that the teacher can use teaching activities, such as pre-reading activities or vocabulary teaching to increase the background knowledge when teaching readings to EFL （English as a foreign language） learners展开更多
