This research paper mainly discusses gender of English nouns and its corresponding issues. Gender in other Indo-European languages is a grammatical abstract notion, but English gender is a semantic concrete conception. English nouns can be divided into four categories: masculine, feminine, common and neuter. Gender genre of an English noun involves the choice of a pronoun that is employed to substitute it. Gender of the pronoun should be identical with its referent. However, the rule may be broken under special conditions. English has lost most word-ending inflectional changes, including grammatical gender of nouns. 展开更多

This paper reports the outcomes of three vocabulary tests taken by 71 second-year undergraduates, discusses the possible effects of contextualized explanation of new words and Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve on the vocabulary teaching and learning. The authors find that in a short duration there is a significant difference between the effect of bilingual (English & Chinese) explanation and that of monolingual (Chinese) explanation on the students' recognition of English new words. 展开更多

This article presents an effective approach to polysemous-word acquisition based on cognitive linguistics. Although it may be true that most vocabulary is acquired through incidental learning, acquiring words through inferring from context is not necessarily the most effective or efficient method in instructional setting. Results of a series of vocabulary tests involving Chinese learners of English show that providing a core sense leads to better guessing and long-term retention of figurative senses of polysemous words. In this article, some practical implications are suggested for reference. 展开更多
