As the title of the thesis suggests, the purpose of this research project was to investigate perceptions of English language education for English majors at the tertiary level on China's mainland. The study investigated perceptions held by teachers and students at universities in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen regarding their preferences for various ELT methods and the effectiveness of methods used. Teachers and students were also asked to evaluate the relative importance of the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Other areas investigated included teachers and students perceptions of their interaction within classrooms and factors selected by teachers, students and administrators as contributing to effective language learning and teaching in their settings. It is hoped that insights from this research can assist in a more successful transition to communicative, more student-centered and skill-integrated language teaching approaches suitable within university-level language education settings on China's mainland. 展开更多

However, there are also some critiques. Some people criticize that to see Business English as ESP can not uncover the characteristics of Business English. After reviewing relevant studies and theories, this paper provides some viewpoints on Business English as a branch of ESP and its critiques. It can not only depend on the teacher's occasional input knowledge concerning cultures but demand fundamental changes in educational structures, philosophies and methoclologies. This paper attempts to build up a conceptual framework guiding the practice of culture-oriented English teaching. The literature review includes three main aspects: aim for strengthening awareness of culture teaching; methodology of culture teaching; culture teaching techniques. The paper also points out that only by combination of language teaching and culture teaching can students reach the purpose of enhancing the intercultural communicative competency. 展开更多

A Study on the Teaching of Lexical Phrases in Non-English Majors' Argumentative Writing

Compared structural approach with communicative approach, the former puts too much emphasis on linguistic knowledge and neglects the language application, while the latter lays too much emphasis on the communicative classroom activities and neglects the systematic study of linguistic knowledge. Both of them cannot meet the requirements of improving the non-English major students' argumentative writing scores. So based on the Lexical Approach theory, taking the College English Integrated Course 4 (LI, 2003) as the main teaching material and lexical phrases as teaching and learning units, this study explores the effectiveness of the Lexical Approach in improving non-English major students' argumentative writing through classroom activities of input, absorption, and output of lexical phrases. The results show that lexical phrases have more effects on students' English competence than single words. They can help to improve the argumentative writing scores and cultivate an interest in learning English independently. 展开更多
