As a global hallmark event, the Olympics, with their enormous scale, universal attraction for the media and tremendous political significance, have increasingly drawn attention from the researchers. It is obvious that Beijing has been greatly impacted by the 2008 Olympic Games as the host. The event aroused close attention of researchers, especially the problem how the Olympic stadiums and facilities can be utilized after Olympic Games. The paper employed 3 methods to conduct a survey, that is, sending questionnaires to tourists, in- terviewing with government officers, and collecting information about former Olympic Parks from Intemet and lit- eratures. The utilization of former Olympic Parks after Games was summarized and some experiences were refined. Besides, 3 main bodies including government, business operators and visitors which formed basic driving forces to influence the park's use were analyzed. At the same time, the paper believes that 3 topics affect the park's utilization involving 'prepare to use', ~how to use it' and ~how to manage it', and Beijing Olympic Park can also follow that thinking and reference in the ft^her practices. Based on it, suggestions are given that Beijing Olympic Park can be planned spatially from 3 layers, the point, line and area, based on their function and infrastructure in the Games, and the area would be shaped as a new urban center with multi-functions while Mega-events and sport events are still the main content of the park.展开更多

Existing land ports as alternatives of dry ports are main strength of Bangladesh to connect with the seaports and offer port transport business for earning foreign exchange and able to play a vital role to develop the South Asia, SW part of China and Myanmar by serving the maritime logistics facilities timely and economically. In here, dry port concept is the main theme for developing port transport business where road, rail and waterways are the connectors or modes of transportation and seaports are the linking points with the sea world, Innovation is the key of success of a business idea and plan where maritime logistics business is the new opportunity of Bangladesh by using natural resources or seaport by mounting infrastructure facilities of nodes (seaport and dry port) and modes (road, rail and waterways) and adding speedy port transport for all. The intermodal freight transportation system is the new concept for creating the new era in the port transport business by using nodes, modes and technology innovatively. This research aims to find out the possible ways and innovations in maritime logistics for doing port transport business by using seaports and land ports by applying qualitative research methodology. The paper also describes the innovations of Rotterdam port as case study that facilitated the needs of a hinterland in Europe to explore the innovations for Bangladesh maritime logistics industry.展开更多

The convergence between cloud computing and tele- com networks could significantly reduce costs and bring new business opportunities for operators. Currently, traditional teleeom operators are embarrassed by the fact that the increase in revenue cannot catch up with the quick growth of users and the expansion of networks. With the introduction of the cloud computing technology, operators can virtualize the network functions through low-cost COTS IT hardware All kinds of existing services can be cloudifled and thus obtain the benefits of statistical multiplexing among IT resources. With the Teleo Cloud architecture, operators can manage both IT infrastructures and network resources intelligently in order to adapt to the dynamic demands from the application and to establish open platforms for developing new services.展开更多

It also includes planning and implementation of targeted interventions in the transport network or facilities. Mobility is a complex process in the area, starting from the departure from the apartment, using various means of transportation, a number of activities in different goals until to return to the location of the apartment. It thus requires extensive transport infrastructure in the form of walkways, bicycle paths, street and railway network. At the same time, reshaping of public transport facilities is needed in which the pedestrian, biker and green concept shall be the main elements of the new spatial conditions. Pedestrian zones development in the city means to create pedestrian areas and green islands in all the places in the city where possible. This process is essential for the transformation of public spaces, in particular, transport corridors. To accomplish the concept of the green transport plan, the need for change in the parking policy is emphasized. This should be an integral part of the city planning and should go hand in hand with the traffic policy.展开更多

For this reason, the development and analysis of an intermodal freight transport which is safe, reliable and sustainable is the first step to a more balanced growth of other transport options. In this sense, SSS (Short Sea Shipping) rises like a real and efficient alternative to the land road-based transport as well as integrated to a multimodal system door to door for the freight distribution. This paper aims to evaluate and identify all those parameters required to determine the characteristics ofa SSS service under a theoretical approach. The increasing growth of the transport market demands to the maritime transport an adaptation effort to the redistribution space processes of production centers and consumption and, as a result of it, of the logistic flows and transport. For this reason, a specific methodology has been developed to model all those phases integrated in the logistic chain of SSS. The final purpose is to determine costs and time of each one of them, for its later implementation in a heuristic algorithm of routing analysis. The main driving factors that determine under which conditions the SSS represents an effective and a feasible solution to road freight are also identified. Information regarding European Union programs to promote the SSS is also presented for a better understanding of the ways of funding sustainable freight transport projects. This investigation states an initial basis for evaluating the competitiveness of SSS concepts, and shows where market and environmental circumstances could be handled in order to enhance the competitiveness of SSS.展开更多

This paper describes a practical technique for preliminary assessment of operational downtime at a proposed bulk terminal. Time-series wind and wave data at an offshore location was purchased. Numerical modelling was then carried out using the MIKE21 SW (spectral wave) model developed by DHI (Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut) to transform these offshore waves into inshore in order to derive wave conditions at the berth. Both wind-waves and swell-waves were considered. Waves affecting the head and beam of a vessel were considered separately for a wide range of vessel sizes with DT (displacement tonnage) ranging from 5,000 tons to 〉 200,000 tons. The limiting wave height H5% was used. Operational downtime was also calculated using significant wave height, Hs as a criterion with limits ofHs = 1.0 m for beam seas and Hs = 1.5 m for head seas. The methodology and lessons learnt from the study can be applied for the development of any sea port worldwide.展开更多

The main objective of this study was to improve loading methods and facilities to minimize the prevailing adverse effects on animal welfare during transport. The study was conducted using cattle from animal farms in Uppsala, Sweden. Data were gathered through field measurements. The inclination of loading ramp was measured using inclinometer while floor quality was evaluated using Skid Resistance Tester. The effect of using loading dock was studied. Continuous measurements of heart rate were made on 349 animals using POLAR Vantage equipment, before transport, during transport and unloading. Vocalization, refusal to leave original place, defecation, urination, refusal to move forward towards a gate, slipping, running away and falling were also observed and recorded as indicators of behavioural alterations during loading activities. The size of observed ramp angles in the farms ranged from 5° to 29°. The heart rate measurement result indicated that loading, unloading and confinement in the stunning box were the most stressful activities. During loading, heart rate elevated by about 42.5% when the animals were forced to leave their original place and turn 180 ℃, by about 39% when animals were forced to move to the loading gate and by about 75% when animals were forced to climb the ramp. The result showed that heart rate increased significantly (P 〈 0.007) with an increase of ramp angle. During loading, when loading dock was used, ramp angle was about zero degree and the increase in heart rate was marginal (ranging from 10% to 23%), while the figure was about 75% without loading dock. About 72% of loose animals and 89% of tied animals strongly refused to climb the ramp and enter the vehicle. Regarding floor quality, the rubber mat had the highest friction coefficient of 0.72 ± 0.024 BPN (British Pendulum Number) and concrete slates had the lowest friction coefficient (0.39 ± 0.028 BPN). Incidence of slippery was observed more in tied animals than in loose animals. About 5.7% of observed animals (280 animals) had elongated and curled hooves.展开更多

The objective is to provide railway undertakings with access to the railway network on equal terms. The main problem is determining the infrastructure capacity. A variety of methodologies are used across Europe for the capacity estimation of railway infrastructure. This diversity has forced railway infrastructure managers to seek a new, common methodology. The UIC methodology is an easy way to calculate the capacity consumption. However, there the possibility to expound this methodology in different ways, which can result in different capacity consumptions. There isan advantage to improve this methodology and to set a clear and unified method of occupation time estimation. The fundamental improvement to UIC methodology is the definition of the occupation time by the trains. This paper gives a description of Slovak and UIC methodologies as a basis for a newly developed approach. The new way of estimation of the capacity consumption (occupation time) is based on a graphic approach. The new methodology concerns the estimation of the infrastructure occupation time and is a conceptual framework developed by the authors for an easier evaluation of occupation time in train traffic diagrams. The new methodology makes the UIC methodology more usable and enables more exact results to be obtained from infrastructure capacity examination.展开更多
