The virgin and recycled metals as well as waste minerals such as fly ash, slag in concrete save energy consumption, CO2 emissions and costs. The importance and effectiveness of recycled materials will be statistically evaluated via energy consumption, carbon footprint, ultimate strength and their ratios. Embodied energy to ultimate strength or embodied carbon to ultimate strength ratios may emphasize the effectiveness of a sustainable material. The analyses in this study indicate the utilization of the recycled steel and C50 concrete with 50% fly ash or slag is the most efficient way of using sustainable materials.展开更多

It can be produced by the esterification of butan...Butyl-levulinate has been identified as a promising fuel candidate with high oxygen content. Its com- bustion in diesel engines yields very low soot and NOx emissions. It can be produced by the esterification of butanol and levulinic acid, which themselves are platform chemicals in a biorenewables-based chemical supply chain. Since the equilibrium of esterification limits the conversion in a conventional reactor, reactive distillation can be applied to overcome this limitation. The presence of the high-boiling catalyst sulfuric acid requires a further separation step downstream of the reactive distillation column to recover the catalyst for recycle. Optimal design specifications and an optimal operating point are determined using rigorous flowsheet optimization. The challenging optimization problem is solved by a favorable initialization strategy and continuous reformulation. The design identified has the potential to produce a renewable transportation fuel at reasonable cost.展开更多
Concern for the environmental impact of organizations' activities has led to the recognition and demand for organizations to manage and report on their carbon footprint. However, there is no limit as to the areas of ...Concern for the environmental impact of organizations' activities has led to the recognition and demand for organizations to manage and report on their carbon footprint. However, there is no limit as to the areas of carbon footprints required in such annual environmental reports. To deliver improvements in the quality of carbon footprint management and reporting, there is a need to identify the main elements of carbon footprint strategy that can be endorsed, supported and encouraged by facility managers. The study investigates carbon footprint elements managed and reported upon by facility manager in the UK. Drawing on a questionnaire survey of 256 facility managers in the UK, the key elements of carbon footprints identified in carbon footprint reports are examined. The findings indicate that the main elements are building energy consumption, waste disposal and water consumption. Business travel in terms of using public transport, air travel and company cars are also recognized as important targets and objectives for the carbon footprint strategy of several FM (facilities management) organizations.展开更多

It supports multi rate, step rate and power factor influence factor of electricity metering method, and can realize the real-time clock, timing backup data, monitoring the temperature and humidity of the environment and other functions, has the ability to forecast the next period of time energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of electrical appliances. Combined with the PC software, the backup data of smart meters to report, detailed list, and the data curve method is presented to the user, and facilitate to analysis of user. The whole embedded in smart meters and the host computer system provides a good human-computer interface, can realize the user personalized service configuration and software calibration function.展开更多
