The paper first discusses the extant problems and then provides a definition of the chunk approach. Based on some research results in cognitive psychology, it analyses the important role that chunks play in language acquisition and production and thus provides a cognitive foundation for implementing the chunk approach in English teaching. The paper also offers a set of classroom activities which can be easily adopted or adapted by other teachers.展开更多

Language corpuses offer great convenience to language researches. Prefabricated chunks are a great help for learners to achieve oral English fluency. With the help of computer software, chunks in SECCL are categorized. The conclusion is in the process of chunks acquiring, emphasis should be on content-related chunks, especially specific topic-related ones. One effective way to gain topic-related chunks is to build topic-related English corpus of native speakers.展开更多

There are a lot of language chunks in block is different from the special language unit words, phrases, sentences, prefabricated resistance, can be stored as a whole and extract which plays important role in language acquisition. Teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the theory of lexical chunks in such aspects as help memorization and build up your language sense showed a huge advantage. To explore the teaching methods of lexical chunks has important significance to improve the effectiveness of Chinese teaching. Our research proposed the novel paradigm for the education which will be meanin~,ful and helnful.展开更多

Traditional phraseological perspective focuses on syntactic and semantic aspects of chunks and its most important criteria of chunk identifications and classifications are compositionality and frozenness/fixedness. Psycholinguistic perspective focuses on the psychological salience of chunks and its most important criterion of identifying a chunk is whether it is processed as a whole unit. Corpus linguistic perspective focuses on frequencies of chunks and its identification of chunks is done on the basis of frequency counts. All of the three perspectives have tapped into the phenomenon of multi-word combinations and yielded fruitful findings on the use of chunks in aspects of quantitative, syntactic, semantic, functional, and psychological features; however, each has their pros and cons展开更多

Students' oral and wriuten discourse reveals surprisingly high rate of deviant usages. A scientific and effective way of teaching and learning vocabulary is therefore strongly desired. This essay explores a comparatively new approach — 'chunking', which is considered as the key to an understanding of how language works. Theoretical underpinnings of this approach suitable for college classrooms are examined before suggestions and pedagogical implications are made as to how to raise students' chunking awareness.展开更多
文摘This paper suggests a chunk approach to solve the plateau problem among advanced English learners. 文摘This paper focuses on using language chunks in college English writing. Based on the psychological theory of memory mechanism, the linguistic theory of lexical approach, together with the analysis of students' compositions, the author argues that writing through language chunks is effective and practicable.
