This paper proposes an approach for rendering breaking waves out of large-scale of particle-based simulation. Moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) is used to solve the governing equation, and 2D simulation is expanded to 3D representation by giving motion variation using fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The waterbody surface is reconstructed from the outlines of 2D simulation. The splashing effect is computed according to the properties of the particles. Realistic features of the wave are ren-dered on GPU, including the reflective and refractive effect and the effect of splash. Experiments showed that the proposed method can simulate large scale breaking waves efficiently. 展开更多

Alignment effect in language research refers to the social cognition process in which people cooperate,adjust,and adapt to each other in interaction.Through empirical study,this paper explores alignment effect in the continuation task of translation(CTOT)and its possible influence on learning of English as foreign languge(EFL).The study was carried out by means of a CTOT.Participants were chosen from non-English major freshmen of similar capacity from a university in Guangzhou.They were divided into two groups,the experimental group(EG)and the control group(CG),with 13 students each.The students in EG were asked to carefully read some English-Chinese bilingual material.Then,the 26 participants were tasked with translating the paragraphs,which followed from Chinese into English.After that,they were asked to write down the words and expressions which they found difficult.Some of the participants were interviewed one month later for a deeper understanding of their memories of the vocabulary and their opinions on the CTOT.The data were analyzed by direct comparison and non-parametric test.The results showed that vocabulary alignment does occur in CTOT.The EG members tended to take advantage of words that appeared in the bilingual reading text.If multiple words from the reading appeared,with the same contextual meaning,they tended to choose the repeated words.As for influence of vocabulary alignment on EFL learning,it seemed that CTOT could not improve the quality of the translation itself,but could assist short-term vocabulary learning though no significant help to long-term vocabulary learning was revealed.The findings of this study provide support and explanation for some features and effects of CTOT,an important form of CT.However,the nature of CTOT itself,and its role in EFL learning deserve further research. 展开更多

A Synonymous Polymorphism of APCDD1 Affects Translation Efficacy and is Associated with Androgenic Alopecia

The APCDDI (adenomatosis polyposis coli down-regulated 1) gene is an inhibitor of the Wnt signaling pathway, and a rare mutation of this gene has been associated with hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. In this study, the authors aimed to investigate whether common APCDD1 gene polymorphisms contribute to the development of androgenic alopecia. Patients (n = 210) with androgenic alopecia and 98 controls were investigated. SNPs (Single nucleotide polymorphisms) in the coding region of the gene were sequenced. A significant difference in genotype distribution was found for the c. 1781C/T, p.L476L SNP (rs3185480) of the APCDD1 gene. This SNP is located in exon 5 and is associated with a 3.5- and a 2.8-fold increase in risk for the development of androgenic alopecia for homozygote (CI 0.933-13.125; nominal regression P = 0.063) and heterozygote (CI 1.086-7.217; nominal regression P = 0.033) carriers, respectively. These data suggest that the rs3185480 polymorphism contributes to the development of androgenic alopecia. Protein expression experiments revealed that the polymorphism is associated with reduced APCDDI protein abundance. This reduction is likely due to altered codon usage for leucine from a preferred codon (CTC) to a rare codon (CTT), which might influence translation efficiency and, thus, APCDDI protein level. 展开更多

Improved Sinusoid Analysis and Post-Processing in Parametric Audio Coding

This paper proposed improvements to the low bit rate parametric audio coder with sinusoid model as its kernel. Firstly, we propose a new method to effectively order and select the perceptually most important sinusoids. The sinusoid which contributes most to the reduction of overall NMR is chosen. Combined with our improved parametric psychoacoustic model and advanced peak riddling techniques, the number of sinusoids required can be greatly reduced and the coding efficiency can be greatly enhanced. A lightweight version is also given to reduce the amount of computation with only little sacrifice of performance. Secondly, we propose two enhancement techniques for sinusoid synthesis: bandwidth enhancement and line enhancement. With little overhead, the effective bandwidth can be extended one more octave; the timbre tends to sound much brighter, thicker and more beautiful. 展开更多

Cells encountering hypoxic stress conserve resources and energy by downregulating the protein synthesis. Here we demonstrate that one mechanism in this response is the translational repression of TOP mRNAs that encode components of the translational apparatus. This mode of regulation involves TSC and Rheb, as knockout of TSC1 or TSC2 or overexpression of Rheb rescued TOP mRNA translation in oxygen-deprived celts. Stress-induced translational repression of these mRNAs closely correlates with the hypophosphorylated state of 4E-BP, a translational repressor. However, a series of 4E-BP loss- and gain-of-function experiments disprove a cause-and- effect relationship between the phosphorylation status of 4E-BP and the translational repression of TOP mRNAs under oxygen or growth factor deprivation. Furthermore, the repressive effect of anoxia is similar to that attained by the very efficient inhibition of mTOR activity by Torin 1, but much more pronounced than roptor or rictor knockouL Likewise, deficiency of raptor or rictor, even though it mildly downregulated basal translation efficiency of TOP mRNAs, failed to suppress the oxygen-mediated translational activation of TOP mRNAs. Finally, co-knockdown of TIA-1 and TIAR, two RNA-binding proteins previously implicated in translational repression of TOP mRNAs in amino acid-starved cells, failed to relieve TOP mRNA translation under other stress conditions. Thus, the nature of the proximal translational regulator of TOP m RNAs remains elusive. 展开更多
