Although many translators have pointed out all kind of mistakes, there is no guiding theory in translating public signs. According to the adaptation theory by Jef. Verschuren, the use of language is just to make continuous choices in order to adapt to the needs of communications. This scientific new research angle can explain and guide translation of public signs. The argument of this paper is how to translate Chinese public signs into English from different context.
