It initiated from the traditional custom originated from the Xia and Shang dynasties, which was held in spring by the river to get rid of bad or evil omen and pray for their descendants. The essential contents of this ceremony, which includes “ablution”, “washing body in March 3 (by the lunar calendar)”, “holding orchid”, “wine up floating in the bendy river” reveal strong life consciousness. The rite obtained new vitality when it became popular from among the ordinary people to the royal people and then into the circle of men of letters as part of their activities of poetry and music. It has brought about a large number of cultural achievements and has had influence on folk customs, on poetry writing and on the spread of poetry.展开更多
