By discussing a number of conversational features which are prominent in every day interaction, but are lacking in the standard English material our students are learning every day, we suggest that everyday conversation is different from standard written English, so taking standard written English as a model in our oral English class is not feasible. We believe that applying CL (corpus linguistics) and CA (conversation analysis) into oral English classroom to design the learning material and classroom tasks is a good way to enhance the authenticity of language learning.展开更多

As a descriptive study, it explores the written communicative events produced by engineers in the pet...This paper presents CACA (computer-assisted corpus analysis) conducted by using a compiled representative corpus. As a descriptive study, it explores the written communicative events produced by engineers in the petroleum industry in Malaysia. Language use is commonly analyzed for competence and performance. Competence is best described as the internalized linguistic knowledge as acquired by the learners while the notion of"performance" is best defined as the external evidence of language competence. Therefore, the core of this paper is reflecting actual language use of the language learners in Malaysia. The data are drawn from a sample corpus compiled from the written communicative events in three companies of the petroleum industry in Malaysia. The methodology applied is fundamental as it tends to investigate the linguistic constitutions in the genre-specific corpus of the professional discourse produced. Computer-based syntactical studies are limited as they require hard work and long hours in order to key-in the data and then there is the complex analytic method of describing the findings. In contrast, this paper will demonstrate an uncomplicated method of analysis and also encourage the use of existing POS (part-of speech) tagging software available online.展开更多
Based on the Asian Corpus of English (ACE) and the British National English (BNC), I investigated the features of discourse marker (DM) so in English as lingua franca (ELF) by comparing it with its use in nati...Based on the Asian Corpus of English (ACE) and the British National English (BNC), I investigated the features of discourse marker (DM) so in English as lingua franca (ELF) by comparing it with its use in native speech. I first calculated the frequency of so in ACE and BNC. Then, taking Buysse's (2012) meta-functional theory of DM so as framework, I comprehensively analyzed the functions of so in ELF and native speech. The results show that Asian ELF speakers utter more tokens of so than native speakers, especially in the scopes of "marking results," "marking conclusion," "holding the floor," "marking summary," "opening new section of discourse," and "shift-back and elaboration." The study implies that in English teaching and learning, ELF should not be treated as an undeveloped language and that the teaching of discourse markers should focus more on the pragmatic functions than on semantic meaning in the narrow sense.展开更多
