In the present scenario, environmental writing becomes a social discourse. This is the result of a new, vibrant and growing environmental constituency in societies such as Brazil, India, Thailand and other Third World Countries. The features of environmental writing include a visible concern for social justice, defence of livelihood and the determining part played by women. This new discourse has emerged with a new focus on redefinition of terms like human rights, common good, democracy and CPRs (common property resources). Environmental Writing becomes a powerful discourse when it protests against the increasingly intrusive and interventionist developmental projects, implemented by the government, which in turn assert dominion over indigenous people of the land. There is also a strong emphasis on prudence among the poor as contrasted to the ecological profligacy of the rich. This paper is an attempt to examine the voices of dissent and the accountability of postmodern writers and environmental activists in India regarding environmental issues in India.展开更多

Thus, there was the problematic for blacks of how to apply citizenship to their corporeal existence when they were labeled as property. The historical legal narrative of America was constructed on the power of the dominant white elite to prevent the emergence of a narrative of African American life other than that which they authorize, legislate, and narrate. To this end, it has been argued, that narratives in African American literature treat the question of the legal status of African Americans or have it as a fundamental trope of struggle in the narrative. This idea suggests that the law's ability as a shaper and determinant of African American social identity, presets the narrative base for African American narrative. This paper examines the relationship between "'laws of separations", and African American narrative through a rereading of works of two contemporary novelists, Toni Morrison and Gloria Naylor. Their works, the author argue, are counter-positioned narratives that create contentious dialogue and elaborate the way in which segregationist codes and Jim Crow laws are grounded in the very nature of citizenship for African Americans.展开更多

This study aimed to explore the types of peer comments, their distribution, and related factors in a Chinese context. It collected and analyzed in NVivo and SPSS 829 peer reviews, survey data, and students' writing and reading scores. Results show that more than half of the comments focused on language, one third on social talk, and about ten percent on content and organization. Multiple regression results show that content score, organization score, good attitude, procrastination, and assignment type were related to the distribution and the length of comments, but many other influencing factors are to be revealed in future research.展开更多

New groups of writers and new writing styles are constantly springing up and existing theoretical criticism has been attacked and torn apart, with the result that it has often lost its voice. With the rapid growth of online literature, the influence of non-mainstream literature in the domain of literary reading and consumption is increasing. Consequently, the above-mentioned problem is evolving into a new contradiction, i.e. a lack of mutual understanding and tolerance with regard to reading. In the past decade, an enormous number of novels have come out online, falling into over twenty categories. This paper takes into account both chronology and type of writing in selecting for review ten outstanding works of different genres from the last decade, stressing the aesthetic qualities and distinctive styles that differentiate them from their print counterparts.展开更多

In the Western academic field, the writing of academic essays is widely used in higher education to assess students' comprehension of the course material and to demonstrate students' academic and research levels. Based on Swales' and Bhatia's approaches, the move analysis is combined with the analysis of linguistic features — lexical and cohesive devices to analyse the research report introduction in order to show the necessity of including discourse analysis into teaching English writing. Based on this analysis, suggested applications for language teaching are put forward.展开更多
