A language carries cultural message of a nation, which reflects the historical and cultural background of this nation, as well as people's thinking, social behavior and lifestyle. Culture records the social development and changes while social development and changes in a variety of things and phenomena will get accumulated and reflected in the language. In the collision of Indian culture and American English, Indian culture has left a deep imprint on American English. American English absorbs a large number of Indian vocabulary, including the names of animals, plants, and many other aspects of social life along with compound words. This paper mainly focuses on the influence of Indian culture on American English, and analyses semantic variants from Indian language in American English, including sound, spelling, semantic and syntactical change. With the tolerance of other languages and many borrowed Indian words, American English makes the 17th century become its starting point of continuous development and evolution.展开更多

In this paper, Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is first used to extract semantic knowledge from a given document, all question paragraphs are identified, an automatic text segmentation approach analogous to Text'filing is exploited to improve the precision of correlating question paragraphs and answer paragraphs, and finally some "important" sentences are extracted from the generic content and the question-answer pairs to generate a complete summary. Experimental results showed that our approach is highly efficient and improves significantly the coherence of the summary while not compromising informativeness.展开更多

In this paper, we present a full Chinese parsing system based on a two-stage approach. Rather than identifying all phrases by a uniform model, we utilize a divide and conquer strategy. We propose an effective and fast method based on Markov model to identify the base phrases. Then we make the first attempt to extend one of the best English parsing models i.e. the head-driven model to recognize Chinese complex phrases. Our two-stage approach is superior to the uniform approach in two aspects. First, it creates synergy between the Markov model and the head-driven model. Second, it reduces the complexity of full Chinese parsing and makes the parsing system space and time efficient. We evaluate our approach in PARSEVAL measures on the open test set, the parsing system performances at 87.53% precision, 87.95% recall.展开更多

The findings indicate that reading comprehension is composed of three major components: "Schema", "Vocabulary", and "Motivation & Purpose". These three components are made up of the following six factors respectively: "textual schema", "extra-textual schema", "vocabulary guessing", "vocabulary noticing", "motivation" and "purpose". Among the major components of reading comprehension, the four factors of "textual schema", "vocabulary guessing", "vocabulary noticing" and "motivation" are significantly correlated with reading comprehension.展开更多

文摘Based on the relationship between language and thinking, this paper is designed to inform that Chinese mode of thinking has great effect on college students' English writing from the perspective of contrastive study of thinking modes between Chinese and English. In addition, one specific measure about training English mode of thinking is put forward.
