The results showed that TMs-students-instructor interaction facilitated the learning of specialized translation strategies, meeting the constructivist educational principle of "interaction". In addition, students effectively constructed new translation knowledge through the negotiation of the differences between student and professional translators' translations, concurring with the constructivist educational principle of "conflict resolution". Finally, students successfully learned technical skills of the Trados tool through hands-on practice, and cognitively acquired specialized translation knowledge through reflections writing and oral presentations, fitting the constructivist educational principle of "active participation". Overall, most students' positive responses justified the constructive educational effectiveness of TM-aided specialized translation through TMs consultation, peer help and the instructor support in the self-paced and student-centered learning environment.展开更多

The article discusses a model for a teacher retraining course in which EFL improvement is the core element.展开更多

Without authenticity, there will be a mismatch between what students learn in the classroom and what they use in real life. However, the notion of authenticity varies with the change between the natural mode and pedagogic mode in the classroom. Therefore, based on this assumption, retrieving and analyzing data from the corpus and classroom videos, the present paper identifies two categories of problems in Chinese teachers' instructional discourse. Sample extracts are discussed and predictions are made on how teachers' failure to produce authentic discourse may result in ineffective teaching and learning.展开更多

This claim arises from the fact that what characterizes a people's linguistic norm takes its rise from the totality of the people's sociocultural practices of which meaningful verbal sounds are of great essence. The meaningful verbal sounds serve as the chief instrument for communicating meanings, feelings, ideas, and abstractions. Whereas the existence of Nigerian English is no doubt, what constitutes its standard variety has been under contestation. In this write up, argument on standardization of Nigerian English is built-up on the basis of the various stages which the language has passed through and is still passing through in Nigeria. Argumentatively, standard variety of Nigerian English is identified and examined with the aim of demonstrating how efforts in standardizing it are made through empirically reliable criteria.展开更多

According to the quantitative analysis of the statistics processed by SPSS (14.0), it is revealed that (1) context clues affect the outcome of contextual guessing significantly, and (2) English proficiency level plays a significant role in contextual guessing as well. On the basis of the major findings in this research, several pedagogical implications are drawn for college English teachers and students: (1) College English teachers should keep the students better informed of the significance and specific functions of context clues in contextual guessing; (2) College English teachers should encourage the students to guess word meanings from context instead of inhibiting it when there are adequate context clues offered.展开更多

As one of the most important representatives of "Third Generation" poets, HAN Dong has created many distinct postmodernist poems. Rejecting metaphor and symbolization, he takes an oral language of original ecology as his poetical discourse mode to affirm the everyday life of here and now, and then both deconstruct metaphoric and symbolic writing of"Misty Poetry" and construct a writing mode of "aestheticization of life". HAN Dong's poetry can be taken as a kind of construction in deconstruction.展开更多
