In order to improve the reliability of the design and calculation of single piles under the combined vertical and lateral loads, the solutions were presented based on the subgrade reaction method, in which the ultimate soil resistance was considered and the coefficient of subgrade reaction was assumed to be a constant. The corresponding computational program was developed using FORTRAN language. A comparison between the obtained solutions and the model test results was made to show the validity of the obtained solutions. The calculation results indicate that both the maximum lateral displacement and bending moment increase with the increase of the vertical and lateral loads and the pile length above ground, while decrease as the pile stiffness, the coefficient of subgrade reaction and the yielding displacement of soil increase. It is also shown that the pile head condition controls the pile responses and the vertical load may cause the instability problem to the pile. In general, the proposed method can be employed to calculate the pile responses independent of the magnitude of the pile deflection. 展开更多

This proposal discusses the issues and dilemmas about the curriculum implementation in the EFL (English as a foreign language) education in China’s middle-schools and examines the nature of integrated contend-based (ICB) instruction by providing its rationale, definition, evolution, and delivery, and based on the above, it explores an excellent venue that the ICB could provide for Chinese student’s EFL learning and calls for the application of the curriculum of ICB into the EFL instruction in China’s secondary education. 展开更多

While the students are learning, their learning is far from ideal or from what the lecturers had intended. Ramsden's findings suggest that there are different levels of learning and that the majority of students are not attaining the level that lecturer's judge to be of value. Learning the English language can be fun through the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Obviously, the trend nowadays is the application of modern technology. Students can now get learning applications on their mobile phones, IPhones, IPads, and ITouch to widen their vocabulary and to increase their knowledge in the four skills such as, Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. The accessibility of learning materials from the library can now be made available anywhere and anytime for students and teachers. This paper seeks to answer the following questions: (I) What is VLE? (2) What are the purposes of establishing VLE in a university? (3) How will the contents make student learning possible? (4) What will its impact on student learning be? The author believes that learning "how to learn" (metacognition) can be improved and enhanced for the students. The VLE serves as a supplementary learning tool in attaining such a goal. 展开更多

Through a dozen years of English learning, some of them have high ability of passing examinations, but the practical application ability is barely satisfactory with relatively poor listening level and oral expression ability. The objective cause for this situation is the relatively single and stylization English teaching model used by traditional colleges and universities. This model only emphasizes learning on class which greatly harms students' English learning enthusiasm and initiatives. The result is that although the students passed CET4 and CET6 long time before their graduation, they still not dare to open their mouth to speaking concerning face to face English communications. Over the years, the researches on how to improve college students' English application ability never stop and they did obtain some achievements and show some opportunities, for example, if we can bring APP (application programs) into college English listening class, it will largely meet students requirements on English learning and this can also replenish and perfect traditional English teaching model. 展开更多

The device chosen to exchange all this information is a smartphone based on Android Operating System and GPS (Global Positioning System) technology mainly. A set of Android applications has been developed using Java language, and controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries. All of them are connected to the Server Application through the Communications Module. The Server Application Module provides the assistants or psychologists the possibility of supervise all the handicapped people activities. The cocktail party problem,i.e.,tracing and recognizing the speech of a specific speaker when multiple speakers talk simultaneously,is one of the critical problems yet to be solved to enable the wide application of automatic speech recognition(ASR) systems.In this overview paper,we review the techniques proposed in the last two decades in attacking this problem.We focus our discussions on the speech separation problem given its central role in the cocktail party environment,and describe the conventional single-channel techniques such as computational auditory scene analysis(CASA),non-negative matrix factorization(NMF) and generative models,the conventional multi-channel techniques such as beamforming and multi-channel blind source separation,and the newly developed deep learning-based techniques,such as deep clustering(DPCL),the deep attractor network(DANet),and permutation invariant training(PIT).We also present techniques developed to improve ASR accuracy and speaker identification in the cocktail party environment.We argue effectively exploiting information in the microphone array,the acoustic training set,and the language itself using a more powerful model.Better optimization ob jective and techniques will be the approach to solving the cocktail party problem. 展开更多
