From the discussion, the author finds that second language learners' lexical competence includes the following aspects: the ability to recall the words which are similar to the target words in spelling and pronunciation; the ability to recall the synonyms of the target words; the ability to recall the antonyms of the target words; and the ability to recall the related words which come together with the target words in a context. The Comparative Study of Metaphors -- From Cognitive and Systemic-Functional Perspectives

Metaphors have different expressions in cognitive and systematic-functional linguistics, which are conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. Conceptual metaphors belong to traditional vocabulary metaphors, and ideational grammatical metaphors are pointed out by Halliday--the main representative of systemic-functional theory. This paper elaborates on the specific grammatical feature of EST (English for Science and Technology) text--"nominalization of processes" to reveal the source of ideational metaphors. From the analysis of some examples, it is found that nominalization as a grammatical metaphor expresses the transference between process types, so it reveals the essence of ideational grammatical metaphors. Meanwhile, the comparison made between grammatical metaphors and vocabulary metaphors reflects the similarities between conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. In this way, this paper comes to the conclusion that the combination of the study methods of metaphors from both cognitive and systemic-functional perspectives is the best way to uncover the basic characteristic of human thinking. 展开更多

Objective Natural language processing (NLP) was used to excavate and visualize the core content of syndrome element syndrome differentiation (SESD). Methods The first step was to build a text mining and analysis environment based on Python language, and built a corpus based on the core chapters of SESD. The second step was to digitalize the corpus. The main steps included word segmentation, information cleaning and merging, document-entry matrix, dictionary compilation and information conversion. The third step was to mine and display the internal information of SESD corpus by means of word cloud, keyword extraction and visualization. Results NLP played a positive role in computer recognition and comprehension of SESD. Different chapters had different keywords and weights. Deficiency syndrome elements were an important component of SESD, such as "Qi deficiency""Yang deficiency" and "Yin deficiency". The important syndrome elements of substantiality included "Blood stasis""Qi stagnation", etc. Core syndrome elements were closely related. Conclusions Syndrome differentiation and treatment was the core of SESD. Using NLP to excavate syndromes differentiation could help reveal the internal relationship between syndromes differentiation and provide basis for artificial intelligence to learn syndromes differentiation. 展开更多

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) is to decide the sense of an ambiguous word on particular context. Most of current studies on WSD only use several ambiguous words as test samples, thus leads to some limitation in practical application. In this paper, we perform WSD study based on large scale real-world corpus using two unsupervised learning algorithms based on ±n-improved Bayesian model and Dependency Grammar (DG)-improved Bayesian model. ±n-improved classifiers reduce the window size of context of ambiguous words with close-distance feature extraction method, and decrease the jamming of useless features, thus obviously improve the accuracy, reaching 83.18% (in open test). DG-improved classifier can more effectively conquer the noise effect existing in Naive-Bayesian classifier. Experimental results show that this approach does better on Chinese WSD, and the open test achieved an accuracy of 86.27%. 展开更多

As a special temporary or local ambiguity in language processing, it has been widely explored and studied from aspects of semantics, syntax, pragmatics as well as psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics over the years, since it was first put forward by Bever in the 1970s. The research of garden path phenomenon is of considerable significance both theoretically and practically. This paper is designed to explore the garden path phenomenon in English through literature and examples. Some basic concepts and main triggering factors of garden path phenomenon are analyzed. This paper explores the triggering factors of garden path phenomenon from the aspects of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The major finding is that garden path phenomenon can help learners understand the operation of human language processing mechanism and improve their abilities to deal with garden path sentences, which is of great benefits to learn and understand English language. 展开更多

Traditional phraseological perspective focuses on syntactic and semantic aspects of chunks and its most important criteria of chunk identifications and classifications are compositionality and frozenness/fixedness. Psycholinguistic perspective focuses on the psychological salience of chunks and its most important criterion of identifying a chunk is whether it is processed as a whole unit. Corpus linguistic perspective focuses on frequencies of chunks and its identification of chunks is done on the basis of frequency counts. Rock mass rating system (RMR) is based on the six parameters which was defined by Bieniawski (1989) [1]. Experts frequently relate joint and discontinuities and ground water conditions in linguistic terms with rough calculation. As a result, there is a sharp transition between two modules which create doubts. So, in this paper the proposed weights technique was applied for linguistic criteria. Then by using the fuzzy inference system and the multi-variable regression analysis, the accurate RMR is predicted. Before the performing of regression analysis, sensitivity analysis was applied for each of Bieniawski parameters. In this process, the best function was selected among linear, logarithmic, exponential and inverse func- tions and finally it was applied in the regression analysis for construction of a predictive equation. From the constructed regression equation the relative importance of the input parameters can also be observed. It should be noted that joint condition was identified as the most important effective parameter upon RMR. Finally, fuzzy and regression models were validated with the test datasets and it was found that the fuzzy model predicts more accurately RMR than reression models. 展开更多
