The Follow up Move Research has been deepening after it was first defined in 1975 by Sinclair and Coulthard, but it has not been paid attention in China, let alone study its effect in the classroom. In this essay based on the author's literature reading, the Follow up move functions and their language features are classified; its pragmatic motivations are researched and some factors which affect its relevance of occurrence are studied. Then with this guide of the frame four teachers classroom follow up moves are studied. Finally, the other scholars' findings in this field are commented and then the author's own insights are put forward. 展开更多

This paper investigates the interpersonal meanings in Chinese cosmetic advertising discourse from mood, modality and appraise the three aspects. Based on an exploratory study of data of six typical Chinese cosmetic advertising discourses, the paper claims that the distribution of mood and modality has close link with the interpersonal meaning in advertising. The Functional Grammar and Appraisal System help to reveal the interpersonal meanings of the discourse concerned. 展开更多

Traditional phraseological perspective focuses on syntactic and semantic... This paper reviews three main perspectives of chunk analyses: traditional phraseological, psycholinguistic, and corpus linguistic perspectives. Traditional phraseological perspective focuses on syntactic and semantic aspects of chunks and its most important criteria of chunk identifications and classifications are compositionality and frozenness/fixedness. Psycholinguistic perspective focuses on the psychological salience of chunks and its most important criterion of identifying a chunk is whether it is processed as a whole unit. Corpus linguistic perspective focuses on frequencies of chunks and its identification of chunks is done on the basis of frequency counts. All of the three perspectives have tapped into the phenomenon of multi-word combinations and yielded fruitful findings on the use of chunks in aspects of quantitative, syntactic, semantic, functional, and psychological features; however, each has their pros and cons 展开更多

This research,grounded in the theory of discourse intonation,investigates Chinese EFL learners' intonation features in interactive context.Its research findings reveal that Chinese EFL learners differ from British native speakers in their application of tone units,prominence selection and tone choice.It further points out that these intonation features are caused on the one hand by Chinese EFL learners' relatively low English proficiency level and on the other hand by their lack of awareness of the communicative and discourse function of intonation.Based on these findings,this research proposes that a discourse-based awareness-raising approach to intonation teaching in the input-poor Chinese EFL context might be of pedagogical necessity and effectiveness. 展开更多

In view of this situation, this paper, employing systemic functional approach, puts forward a new perspective on assessing writing — a textual metafunction perspective, by analyzing the Thematic structure both above and at the clausal level and uncovering the strengths and weaknesses of the student's writing, and giving it a full functional analysis from the three metafuncitons. In the end, the paper points out the pedagogical implications of this method in English writing assessing and teaching. 展开更多

" It gives a detailed mapping of the user-friendliness of the dictionary in question and points out that MEDAL is helpful to learners of English mainly because it answers both their decoding and encoding needs. To further explore the potential of a good learner's dictionary, the current author also discusses the role of an English teacher in helping his/her students to make better use of the dictionary, and consequently ensures the supportiveness of MEDAL in the language learning process. 展开更多

This study investigated the resetting process of the articles' parameters by Chinese English learners with a Forced Choice Elicitation Task on the basis of the Article Choice Parameter and Fluctuation Hypothesis proposed by Ionin, Ko and Wexler (2004). It was found that Chinese English learners fluctuate between definiteness and specificity, the two parameter-settings of articles. Our findings are consistent with the Fluctuation Hypothesis. Their performance can be accounted for under the theoretical framework of Distributed Morphology. The difficulty in article acquisition lies in the fact that Chinese English learners can not easily identify the correct features in the specification of syntactic terminal nodes as well as the vocabulary items, but they possess the syntactic knowledge and they can access the definiteness parameter setting with enough L2 input. Chinese English learners' interlanguage syntax is not impaired and UG full access is supported. 展开更多
