This paper starts from the idea of communicative competence proposed by linguist Dwell Hymes and then goes deep to find out 4 ways to apply the ideas to spoken English teaching, namely: strengthening students' linguistic input through comprehensible listening; getting a feel of how English is spoken idiomatically; administering the teaching materials according to students' current linguistic capacity and finally exposing students massively to the target culture. The issue on which this essay focuses is how to adapt the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Approach to China's context. With the recent accession to the WTO, the long-awaited Olympic games in Beijing, China has made learning English a national priority. It is very important and necessary to research on how to adapt CLT flexibly and appropriately to China's context if most Chinese English learners are to gain a good grasp of oral English, and if specialist learning is to be achieved by those who need English for business and academic purposes. Therefore this essay is structured as follows: First, analyzing the different types of English teaching methods in China and then focusing on the CLT Method. By analyzing and contrasting these English teaching methods, the need to change the current English teaching methods in China will be discovered. Finally, it explains the problems of adopting the more modem CLT Approach and gives suggestions on how it may best be adapted to the Chinese context. 展开更多

This paper, taking Incoterms for international trade as an example (with "CIF" as the case for analysis), introduces 7 types of dictionary structures (overall structure, frame stzucture/megastrncture, macrostructure, microstzucture, distribution structure, cross-reference stzucture/mediostrncture and access structure), summarizes the knowledge system of international trade terms (consisting of "international trade", "sets of rules of international trade terms", "Incoterms 2010", and "CIF"), and illustrates the methods of systematically presenting the knowledge system of international trade terms through dictionary structures in an English-English-Chinese bilingualized business English learners' dictionary with Oxford Business English Dictionary for Learners of English (New Edition) as a reference. To accomplish this goal, we have made some investigations into students' current oral proficiency and their English language needs, as well as a detailed analysis of the factors constraining the development of oral proficiency. And in the light of the principles of communicative language teaching, practical ways of reform are proposed in this thesis. By exploring the ways thirty Asian EFL students at QUT learned their English grammar, this survey was an attempt to address several controversial issues regarding grammar teaching and learning. Research findings indicate that for EFL students, the grammar ability is a result of learning, rather than of acquisition, and that English grammar can be taught as an individual subject. While employing CLT approach in their EFL teaching, practitioners need a critical eye to caution against its idolization. Finally, the survey reveals that instrumental orientation provides an effective context for language success. 展开更多
