The former encompasses a wide range of teachereducation initiatives at the levels of diploma, bachelor’s degree, postgraduate diploma, and even master’s degree for teacher licensure purposes. These are widely documented in the literature. What is important is how teacher professional development contributes to bolstering the teachereducator force, which is relatively insufficiently documented due to the very fact that different educational systems have somewhat different expectations of such programs in relation to the ideologies and theories underpinning the teacher professional development program design and curriculum offering. Taking stock of a postgraduate diploma program in English language teaching(PGDELT) for teachers’ continuing professional development with a 31-year history housed at a premier teacher education institution in Singapore, which has successfully graduated over 1, 000 English language teachers for colleges and universities in China, I intend to highlight some of its key features, as a former student and then a lecturer on the program, in order to draw implications for sustainable growth of language teacher education programs, especially those whose main purposes are to prepare teachers of English as a second or foreign language(ESL/EFL) and provide continuing professional development opportunities for such inservice teachers.展开更多

The latest College English Curriculum issued by MOE (Ministry of Education) does not reflect the trend of developing College English Teaching by focusing on ESP, but rather on improving general English course books. However, the first local College English Curriculum published in 2012 in Shanghai focuses on developing ESP and English for academic purpose as its teaching objectives. This paper analyzes different definitions of ESP in China's education setting, compares different views on handling the relationship between EGP and ESP in China's College English Reform, and explores how to apply an appropriate notion of EGP to College English teaching in China.展开更多

The application of "harmonious teaching method" in the sports dance teaching of general colleges can help theoretically analyze the teaching process of existing sports dance actions and reveal the main reason for the gap with the goal of "comprehensive harmonious development", and also can verify the theoretical analysis results. Therefore, using teaching experiment method, experiment class and control class were selected for implementing two different teaching methods. Difference T test of small samples average was made on the acquired data for revealing the teaching effect difference between two different teaching methods. The result shows that the difference between two teaching methods was significant. The application of "harmonious teaching method" in the sports dance teaching of physical education of general colleges plays a certain positive role in training the comprehensive and harmonious moral, intellectual and physical developments of college students.展开更多

Survey design was utilized for this study: The population comprised of youths in the Niger-Delta region. Samples of 200 youths were studied. Four hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. It is generally accepted that a holistic approach is essential in sustainability studies, but teaching such a new and complex topic to a diverse student population is by no means easy. In this study, sustainability is viewed in the context of Systems Thinking, particularly in Complexity Management domain. A general framework is proposed with the intension of guiding potential instructors who are planning to teach sustainability through Systems Thinking. The framework includes only the suggested systems-oriented material and a review of some system methodologies; it does not cover sustainability issues. Methodologies known as System Dynamics and Soft Cybernetics are explored and emphasized particularly in the paper due to their importance. The framework is kept general enough so that it appeals to students and instructors with a variety of background.展开更多

Drawing upon earlier research on conceptual frameworks, it examines the knowledge base of pre-service teachers through research into the curriculums in TEFL education across diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A comparative study of the curriculum structures in the education of TEFL teachers reveals a number of key areas of concern: the main hindrance to the development of a stronger knowledge base of pre-service teachers lies in the serious shortage of pedagogical content knowledge, fundamental pedagogical knowledge that are currently available, as well as with the overall inadequacy of practicum hours. It strongly argues for the breadth versus depth in course design and calls for the imperative to reconceptualize the knowledge base of pre-service teachers.展开更多
