Quality strategies, policies and goals focusing on customers′ needs are clearly established. Continuous quality improvement has been adopted as the corporate strategy to improve its performance and competitive edge. This paper presents the successful implementation of a quality improvement project using the work study approach. On the completion of the project, the rate of serious defects which may lead to an accident is reduced by 55%, i.e., from 2% ̄0.9% over a period of two years. A total of HK$ 1.1 million spent on the project is justified when compared with the reduction of financial risks involved. The success of the project demonstrates that the work study approach could be an effective tool for improving the performance of maintenance work.展开更多

In the experiment, six fishmeal-based diets wereformulated to contain various protein levels (20% to 45% in 5% increments), with dietary energyranging from 2210.7kJ100g to 2250.2 kJ 100g dry matter. The protein to energy ratios of diets rangedfrom 8.58 mg protein kJ^(-1) to 20.03 mg protein kJ^(-1). Diets were fed for 90 d to triplicategroups of fish stocked in 0.128 m^3 seawater tanks, 25 individuals each. The daily ration of 2% wetbody weight was offered to the fish thrice a day. The fish at the end of the study had more thanten-fold (77.0 g) increase in weight compared to the initial (8.0 g). Fish fed diets of 40% and 45%protein produced significantly (P【0.05) higher weight gain of 77.2 g and 76.5 g, and specific growthrate (SGR) of 2.65% and 2.62% than those of 67.0 g and 68.3 g, and 2.49% and 2.51% of the otherdiets. The broken-line regression of SGR against dietary protein level yielded an optimum dietaryprotein requirement of 42.6% (Y = - 1.6295 + 0.1114 X^2, P【0.05). Survival remained 100% amonggroups. Feed conversion ratio decreased from 0.45 for fish fed 20% dietary protein to 0.35 for fishfed 45% dietary protein. Nitrogen intake increased with an increase in dietary protein, which inturn resulted in an increase in nitrogen gain of fish whole body. Fish fed 40% and 45% protein dietsshowed higher (P【0.05) nitrogen gain (0.27g and 0.26g) than those (0.23g and 025g) fed all otherdiets. Gross energy intake (GEI) in fish fed 45% protein was lower (600.67kJ) than that (607.97 kJ)of 40% protein diet, though the differences were not statistically significant (P】0.05); GEI rangingfrom 677.31 kJ to 663.20 kJ at remaining four diets (20% to 35% protein) did not appear to differsignificantly (P】0.05). The highest energy gain of 518.33 kJ was obtained with fish fed 40% protein, resulting in the highest energy retention efficiency of 85.26%. The hepatosomatic index of fish feddiets of 20%, 25%, 30% and 35% protein were significantly (P【0.05) higher (2.09% to 2.57%) thanthose (1.44% and 1.41%) of fish fed diets containing 40% and 45% protein. Liver lipid contentsdecreased from 8.72% to 7.0% in fish fed dietary protein of 20% to 45% in 5% increments. Resultssuggest that the diet containing 40% to 42.6% protein with a P/E ratio of 17.6 mg protein kJ^(-1) isrequired for good growth of L. argentimaculatus weighing between 8.0 g and 85.2 g under the cultureconditions of the present study.展开更多

When meeting peak load requirements, a power station is turned on at a particular time during the day, generates power at a constant load for a certain number of hours, and is then turned off or set to a different load for another time period, resulting in a high variability inflow discharges. Where reservoir hydro schemes are operated primarily to provide peak load services, there are particular environmental risks that should be considered in any environmental impact assessment. At a minimum these should focus on water quality, fluvial geomorphology, riparian vegetation, macro-invertebrate and fish communities underpinned by a sound hydrological analysis. Frequent temperature changes may occur downstream of a peaking power station; increased seepage-induced erosion of riverbanks due to frequent water level drawdowns; and impacts to macro-invertebrate and fish communities due to rapid and frequent in channel habitat conditions. With a sound understanding of the potential environmental issues, there are strategies that can be employed at the siting and design stage to minimize or mitigate these risks, including but not limited to minimum environmental flows, ramping rules, utilization of a re-regulation storage and localized treatment works.展开更多

Based on massive monitoring data of Lake Baiyangdian and the important advantage of spatial analysis functions of GIS (geographical information system), a system of B-WEIS (Baiyangdian water environment information system) was designed in the work. Component GIS of ArcEngine 9.3 GIS, combined with GIS and component technology, was used to research and develop the proposed system. This system realized different functions of management, data query, statistic analysis and visualization query to the Lake Baiyangdian water monitoring results. It also integrated with professional water quality model to realize evaluation of water quality and calculation of environmental capacity function. The designed system contributed to expand the management on Lake Baiyangdian more professional and available.展开更多

In the present study, the corrosion protective effect of ozone was conducted by immersion test and electrochemical techniques. It was found that corrosion protective effect was revealed in the range of 2.0 to 2.7 ppm of ozone concentration in seawater. The ratio of the rust area of specimen became 20% in that concentration region. The rusted area is strongly influenced by the ozone concentration and the flow rate determined by FEM (finite element method). Ozone has a good influence for ballast tanks, i.e., ozone can delay the rust of ballast tanks, provided that the suitable concentration of ozone is selected. In this case, ozone may stop the corrosion at the defects, if a part of the paint in ballast tank is peeled off. However, ozone may also promote the corrosion of steel when the ozone concentration is very high, e.g., 10 ppm. Attention should be paid to the ozone concentration, if we use ozone as an active substance for ballast water management systems.展开更多

Population estimates are tentative, and information on the species' distribution and available habitat is required for for-mulating immediate management and conservation strategies. To support management decisions and conservation priorities, we integrated information from a number of small-scale observational studies, interviews and reports from multiple sources to define habitat parameters and create a habitat quality model for mountain nyala in the Bale Mountains. For our analysis, we used the FunConn model, an expertise-based model that considers spatial relationships (i.e., patch size, distance) between the species and vegetation type, topography and disturbance to create a habitat quality surface. The habitat quality model showed that approxi- mately 18,610 km^2 (82.7% of our study area) is unsuitable or poor habitat for the mountain nyala, while 2,857 km^2 (12.7%) and 1,026 km^2 (4.6%) was ranked as good or optimal habitat, respectively. Our results not only reflected human induced habitat deg-radation, but also revealed an extensive area of intact habitat on the remote slopes of the Bale Mountain's southern and southeast- ern escarpments. This study provides an example of the roles that expert knowledge can still play in modem geospatial modeling of wildlife habitat. New geospatial tools, such as the FunConn model, are readily available to wildlife managers and allow them to perform spatial analyses with minimal software, data and training requirements. This approach may be especially useful for species that are obscure to science or when field surveys are not practical .展开更多
