To analyze the use of upper limb support during paraplegic walking assisted by functional electrical stimulation ( FES), a new dynamical measurement for handle reaction vector (HRV) ap- plied by patient to walker was ...To analyze the use of upper limb support during paraplegic walking assisted by functional electrical stimulation ( FES), a new dynamical measurement for handle reaction vector (HRV) ap- plied by patient to walker was proposed. To avoid the discomfort of direct monitoring, the dyna- mometer system was designed based on 12 string-gauge bridges instrumented on a standard walker frame. The detailed positions of these bridges were determined according to the deformation distri- butions of the walker frame under different directional components of HRV. To adapt the system to quantitative and reliable measurement, a redundant-optimized technique was developed in calibra- tion. The measurement accuracy, nonlinearity. and crosstalk of the designed system were investi- gated, which were better than 1.01%. 2.91%, and 3.19% respectively. Clinical trials were done with 6 paraplegic subjects using the system and one case was given as the example of actual mea- surement. All experiment and clinical trial results show that this method is reliable and practicable.展开更多

The United States Congress set a benchmark in US anti-human trafficking policy with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 （TVPA 2000J. The TVPA 2000 and its subsequent reauthorizations in 2003, 2005, and 200...The United States Congress set a benchmark in US anti-human trafficking policy with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 （TVPA 2000J. The TVPA 2000 and its subsequent reauthorizations in 2003, 2005, and 2008 were put forth to increase the scope, focus, and effectiveness of US efforts to combat human trafficking. In-depth analyses of each reauthorization provide an understanding of the aims of the TVPA. The evolution of the TVPA reauthorizations dearly demonstrates that the US is committed to thwarting human trafficking both domestically and internationally. The analyses examine strengths and weaknesses of the legislation and provide insight as to how the TVPA reached its current state as the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 （TVPRA 2008）. Drawing from the evolution of TVPA legislation, the future of the human trafficking phenomenon and legislation is discussed.展开更多
At Quesang on the Tibetan Plateau we report a series of hand and foot impressions that appear to have been intentionally placed on the surface of a unit of soft travertine.The travertine was deposited by water from a ...At Quesang on the Tibetan Plateau we report a series of hand and foot impressions that appear to have been intentionally placed on the surface of a unit of soft travertine.The travertine was deposited by water from a hot spring which is now inactive and as the travertine lithified it preserved the traces.On the basis of the sizes of the hand and foot traces,we suggest that two track-makers were involved and were likely children.We interpret this event as a deliberate artistic act that created a work of parietal art.The travertine unit on which the traces were imprinted dates to between~169 and 226 ka BP.This would make the site the earliest currently known example of parietal art in the world and would also provide the earliest evidence discovered to date for hominins on the High Tibetan Plateau(above 4000 m a.s.l.).This remarkable discovery adds to the body of research that identifies children as some of the earliest artists within the genus Homo.展开更多

Located at the cross roads of four countries： Main land Afghanistan, Tajikistan, China, and Pakistan. The Wakhan Corridor has been the most important junction point of the Silk Route since its inception. The corridor has long been used as a trade route by Europeans and Chinese to reach the Indian Plains and the Indian Ocean＇s Sea Lines of Communications through the Arabian Sea Coasts. Extra regional aspects in forms of quest for the Great Game between Russia and Britain since 1838, the Chinese Communist Revolution of 1949, the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan for a decade followed by the NATO invasion of Afghanistan since 2001 has unfortunately kept any kind of infrastructural development in Wakhan as a fallacy. The opening up of Wakhjir Pass by China will surely improve regional trade and relations; however, India feels threatened as it thinks that the opening up of the Wakhan Corridor will be an outflanking maneuvre against its interests in Indianheld Kashmir; however, it cannot remain aloof of other regional and extra regional players and will be forced to share Central Asian energy resources for its economic development along with countries under the U.S. umbrella. The U.S. in combination with China must play its role for enhancing regional stability.展开更多
