Cosmic ray intensity distribution on the Earth surface contains information on the space distribution of magnetospheric MF through which charged particles propagate. Feasibility and limitations of cosmic ray data to be a tool for the validation of magnetospheric MF models have been analyzed. The authors' approach is based on the fact that time variations of magnetospheric cosmic ray are related to the changes in geomagnetic cutoff rigidities. The obtained cutoff rigidity changes by the trajectory tracing method in the MF model with those obtained on the base of experimental cosmic ray data have also been compared. The obtained results have shown that cosmic ray data can be successfully used for validation of models in presenting the dynamic structure of magnetospheric MF at mid latitudes.展开更多

These CMEs caused two large geomagnetic storms and continuous energy proton events. During this period, one large positive ionospheric storm happened over the East-Asian region on Nov. 8, 2004. On Nov. 10, 2004, a strong spread-F was observed by the ionosonde located in the mid-latitude region of East China and Japan, and the ionospheric fluctuation over the ionosonde stations derived from GPS observation was also obvious. In this report, the characteristics of the spatial distribution of the ionosphere fluctuation and its temporal evolution are studied using the parameter of the rate of total electron content (ROT) derived from dual-frequency GPS measurement. Strong fluctuating activity of the ionosphere was found over the mid-latitude region in the southern and northern hemispheres between longitudes of 100°E and 180°E during the magnetic storm period on Nov. 10, 2004, and a regular movement of the disturbing region was observed. In the end, the reason of the ionospheric fluctuation during this magnetic storm is analyzed.展开更多

These events were also associated with sunward flow enhancements at each location in the Northern Hemisphere which were shown in ionospheric convections measured by the SuperDARN radars. These are typical features of high-latitude (lobe) magnetic reconnections. The durations of the velocity enhancements imply that the evolution time of the lobe reconnec- tions is about 8-16 rain from their origin at the reconnection site to their addition to the magnetotall lobe again. In additional, the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft was moving from magnetosheath into magnetosphere, and crossing the magnetopause near the subsolar region during this interval, and observed typical low-latitude magnetic reconnection signatures. This infers that the dayside high- and low-latitude reconnections may occur simultaneously.展开更多

Here we report new magnetostrati- graphic results that constrain age of the Hougou Paleolithic site in this basin. Magnetite and hematite were identified as carriers of the characteristic remanent magnetizations, with the former being dominant. Magnetic polarity stratigraphy shows that the Hougou sequence recorded the very late Matuyama reverse chron and the Brunhes normal chron. The age of the Hougou Paleolithic site was estimated to be 395 ka based on an averaged rate of sediment accumulation. The combination of our mag- netostratigraphy and previously published chronological data for early Paleolithic or human sites in the high-latitude northern China may document a persistent colonization of the hostile high-latitude areas of the eastern Old World during the mid- die-early Pleistocene.展开更多

The relationships between the latitudinal location of SAID and the Kp, AL, and Dst indices for these events were also discussed. It was found that the SAID events happened mainly at invariant latitude (ILAT) of 60.4° and magnetic local time (MLT) of 21.6 MLT and that 92.4% of the events happened when the Kp index was below 5.0, indicating a medium geomagnetic activity. The latitudinal half-width of SAID varied from 0.5° to 3.0° with a typical half-width of 1.0°. The SAID would happen at low latitudes if the geomagnetic activity was high. The effects of SAID on equatorial outer plas- masphere trough evolutions were studied with the dynamic global core plasma model (DGCPM) driven by the statistical results of SAID signatures. It was noted that locations, shapes and density of troughs vary with ILAT, MLT, latitudinal width, cross polar cap potential and lifetime of SAID events. The evolution of a trough is determined by the extent of SAID electric field penetrating into plasmasphere and not all SAID events can result in trough formations.展开更多
